NEED HELP - No Fuel press. - No error codes

I need some assistance.

Started the truck this A.M. within 10 seconds... it stahled. ~2lbs fuel pressure after it died.

I hot wired the lift pump and it pumped fuel.
I pulled the fuel system relay and heard the inj pump click. Amp meter showed ~1 amp across the fuel system relay.

I did not see the check engine light come on. Could not get any codes manually.

ECM?????

I did notice a little more black smoke that usual on acceleration.

Please give me your guidance.

99 Ram 3500 24v - New inj pump Aug 11, new lift pump Jun 11, new ECM Aug 11.
The only MOD is a Edge EZ that has been on the truck since 1999.

Can't get codes manually? Can you explain this?
Are you using a code reader? '99's won't read codes in the odo window.

Loosen 1,3,4 injector lines at the head and crank it for 10 seconds. Any fuel leaking at the loose lines? If so, tighten that line and retry.

When you say the lift pump worked, did you see pressure or fuel flow? ( stock lift pumps can run but not move fuel.)

J-Fox,

I dont have a code reader. From what I have researched there is no manual way to read the codes on 98-99 trucks.
I hotwired the lift pump. pressure was good. The truck started then stahled.
There was air in the fuel filter canister. I bled it out and was able to get the truck running.
I don't know why the lift pump did not start before. But it [now] it only pumps less than 5psi when the keys are turned on. If I "bump" the ingnition then the lift pump stays on for 25 seconds with 15psi.
Why does the lift pump only put out <5psi when the ignition is turned on? Do I need a new lift pump??

when was the last time the fuel filter was changed?
it will run with less than 2 psi pressure is the VP44 can pull the fuel through the lift pump.

I think the change in psi is due to the way the ecm is programmed..its easier starting with low pressure.

There was a leak around the filter.
I changed the filter and (after many minutes of pain staking gasket alignment) all is sealed.

However, the lift pump does not come on for (4 seconds) when the key or ignition is turned on. It does come on for 25 seconds when the starter turnes over.
Anyone know the answer to this riddle?? I am afraid that there are bigger issues lurking.....

Turning the key to 'on' just bumps the lift pump.
It doesn't run for 4 seconds.
Sounds very normal.
