motor mounts and squirrels

Hello,
Here are a couple of incidents for new Cummins owners.
Most of my experience is with a Chevy 6.2 L truck that I am restoring.
The Dodge has a S&B air filter and an Edge installed.
I was troubleshooting a leak in the front of the engine.
While under the truck I noticed the oilpan close to the frame crossmember. I thought what a hassle changing the oilpan gasket would be.
While on top, I was focussed on looking between the fan and the front of the engine looking for the leak.
I had also noticed that the truck was making a loud wup-wup-wup sound from the direction of the turbo. It also was surging when being driven. I thought maybe this was due to the engine being cold as when it warmed up the surging stopped.
I took the truck to my mechanic so he could find the leak.
Popped open the hood with him standing in front of the truck and me on the right side.
Whoa! A squirrel had filled the inside of the S&B filter with peanuts and had the outside of the filter surrounded with peanuts. The only open space was directly in front of the housing facing the fender.
Problem one solved.
I asked him about the low oilpan. He indicated that wasn't right.
It turned out the left engine mount bolt was snapped in two. The only reason it hadn't fallen out was due to it being jammed in place.
The oilpan had rubbed on the crossmember but did not need replacing.
Fixing this raised the oilpan about an inch.
The leak was a front crank seal which had been put in backwards.
Happy driving.

I spoke with a guy on a jobsite onetime, who witnessed a groundhog climbing down out of the engine bay of his truck. It had been feasting on wire insulation.

Rodents...

I was checking my oil the other day and noticed that the air filter gauge was showing high restriction... I thought that was odd because I had recently cleaned and oiled the filter.

I popped the cover and pulled the filter to find the entire box packed solid with grass, bits of string and plastic. There was about a 3"x3" path for air to get through to the filter.

I was grateful to have a K&N installed. The little bugger had tried to gnaw on the filter but the mesh stopped him. If it had been a plain paper filter it probably would have been shredded and my turbo packed full of that junk!

The odd thing is that I did not notice any improvement in MPG after cleaning it out!?!

That's where a BHAF comes in handy! And a .22!

Use peanuts and dried grass for bait.
