Luke's Links Install (Pics)
well i got my Lukes Links in the mail today. Looks pretty straight forward. Instructions seemed a little vague o me at first but after i got tearing into the install it made perfect since.
My trac bar seems solid but my main concern was my drag link tie rod ends. I had replaced the whole bar about a year ago and when i did the whole thing was so shot the ball in the end was close to falling ont of the bar!!!
This time was almost as bad but no where near the damage to the rod inself.
It only took an hour or so to do both drivers side and passengers side. The hardest part was removing the steering linkage. I think the only think Luke's could improve in is some sofr of seal near the top if the rod. They sent a large rubber washer but after it was all put back together the rubber washer didnt seem to do much. I packed the insides full of wheel; bearing grease as i put the whole assembaly together and again using the zerk fitting just to be safe.
If your gonna do this install be VERY CAREFULL of the threads on the origional ball on the drag link or trac bar as these are re-used in the new setup. I messed mine up a bit and had a heck of a time finding a 14 x 1.50 tap and dye set to rethread. In fact i could'nt find one in time so i had to gring the threads to a cone shape to get the castle nut back on.
The nice thing about em is you can adjust them if they become loose.
Just add some spacers (washers).
The origional part was so worn that after it was off the truck it would just flop around like a dead fish. This new setup seems much tighter.
Here are some pics in case anyone wanted to see the prograss.

it set me back $140. Pretty much the cost of a new drag link. But this time i dont have to buy a whole NEW one!!!
i can rebuild it for a fraction of the cost.
Seems to handle better. Like i said it was pretty bad before the install. I good wrap of wire around the thing a few times would have helped
I made it pretty tight. But lose enough that i could move the stud with a bit of effort with my hand. I did'nt shave any of the urithane spring either.
We'll se hoe this lasts. I'm excited that i can go off road again without concern my front wheels are gonna wonder two diferent directions without warning though.

I lukes linked my track bar a few years ago, im not a fan anymore, that. Id call it a band aid fix. that urethane spring wears out fast and the resulting play is worse then before the link is installed. The plastic washer also cracks and falls apart pretty quickly. Yes its rebuildable, make sure to order a few replacements before installing it.
