LP and VP-44?

LP and VP-44?
Ok I thought I knew what a Lift pump was until I heard about the VP-44. I guess I dont understand how either of these work! I really hate to be a pain in the neck but its nice to know how your truck works. If someone has some free time and patience could you try and explain these two things to me? Thanks...and again sorry for any inconvenience.

Due to the long suction line between the fuel tank and the injection pump, the lift pump acts as a transfer / priming pump for the injection pump.
