Hey there a friend of mine is looking at buying an 02 2500 longbox extended cab and she is wondering what to look for. She said the fuel pump is new but I don't know if it is the VP44 or the lift pump. She also said it has an Edge chip on it. What are some things that she should look for?

 

Do not buy it without checking the fuel pressure. Take a manual gauge along, other than that, give it a good once over. You can check for the 53 block, but in that year, it should be very rare.

 

I love my 02, 181K strong. I would definitely look closely at the VP44, the LP may be new because the old one was dead for some time thus hurting the VP44. Make sure you have her do the key on/off to check for codes.

 

If she is serious about the truck, have the seller let you take it to a Cummins service center & let them do an accurate fuel pressure check. $150 is better than $1200 for a vp44.

 

check the bottom of the doors for rust... & others have said check the fuel pressure... find out whether the "new" pump is at the engine, frame rail, or in-tank
