O.k so I just pulled into a ice packed parking lot this morning, in 2WD and went to park in my spot on a slight hill. I was creeping up into it and sure enough one wheel broke traction.
I could not back up due to the paking space arrangement so I went to put it in 4WD. As you know it is hard as heck to lock it in at a stand still so I pushed into 4W High and tried pull forward then back up a little, It grinded and sounded awefull
so I pushed it into N then back into 4W High. It finally locked in and I pulled up.
Why is it so hard to lock in when stuck?
Is the grinding as BAD as it sounds?
Is this something that should ALWAYS be avoided?
I have only had to do it about 4 or 5 times since I owned the truck. The worst part is that I drive the biggest baddest rig here and SEVERAL people saw it and were laughing!
Any input appreciated.

I've never had a problem going into 4HI.
Can't seem to ever be able to get it into 4LOW without grinding, pulling forward a bit, grinding, putting it in neutral, trying again, more grinding, then for no reason it slips right in.

No problems ever getting into 4 hi, 4 low the manual suggests rollings very slow about 3 mph and then it slips in, me I'm always stopped and in neutral try 4lo grind, give gas back to idle rpm and it slips in. The thing that's weird is there is no connection between the rpm of the engine and transfer case but it works for me

Hey thanks for the feedback you guys! Its nice to know that I am not the only one who has had an occasional grind or two!
One time I was at a stop sign, flat elevation, stopped on some ice and guess what, the slippage factor!
Then the grind factor! It's amazing what I have driven my truck through in 4WD yet a little patch of ice and stop me cold in 2WD unless I am ready to grind a bit......amazing!

I use my 4 wd hi quite often throughout the year, and I can engage mine even while moving at 20 mph without grinding(low you have to stop completely).
Try adjusting your linkage(if it needs it), but you'll probably just have to lube t-case linkages with silicone lube, and work it back and forth, until it is free moving, this will probably cure it. Also try ATF+4 in transfer case.

I never get grinding when shifting into 4HI....I have done it one the highway going 65....when I see snow/ice ahead. 4LOW I dont ever get grinding unless I shift while I am still moving.
If the trans. is in Drive and you let the transfer case go into neutral, the whole assembly spins and your brakes have no effect on it so trying to get the transfer case back in gear or trans. back in Park gives alot of grind. Shutting the motor off lets you start all over. Basically, don't let the transfer case go into neutral.
Just push in the clutch on manual transmission trucks.

Clunk got it on the button there...
I've run across the same problem with Mom's automatic... If you hit neutral on the T case you might as well shutdown the engine and start over... You'll never get it back in to gear on a AUTO trans... But on a MANUAL trans... If you hold your cluctch in you can pass into any gear as long as you stopped. If you pause to long on N on a manual yo might get some grind. Pilot bearing will still turn the Trans and T case a bit...

I have no problems with mine. My truck does not have the CAD, so everything is constantly turning in sync. This is the best shifting truck/Jeep/Peice of equipment I have ever had as far as the transfer case goes. And the 5600 is just butter too.

Yeah, what he said. I've had 3 shift-on-the-fly 4 wheel drives with an auto. 4hi, smooth 50-55 mph. 4lo, stop> trans in neutral> slam it all the way up. DON'T stop in the neutral position on the T case.
Yeah, I meant put the tranny in neutral, shift to 4 low, put tranny back in drive. Didn't clarify. Just a little grinding going into low range, enough to let you know something's going on. We tore out some foundation shrubbery new year's eve at about 2 AM.
4 Low is awesome, those junipers didn't stand a chance. Ripped em out by the roots and drug them down the street, had a 99 powerstroke on one side of the porch and my ctd on the other.
