Location of camshaft sensor? Help!

I have a '99 Dodge 2500 w/ Cummins diesel. The check engine light came on a few days ago. After taking it to the dealer, I was told the problem was the 'cam shaft sensor'. Anyone have any idea where that sucker is hiding on my motor. Pictures or diagram/drawings would be helpful. By the way, great website-I'm glad I found it!
Thanks for any feedback.
Ron

If your truck is a 99 you have a crankshaft sensor. Camshaft sensors started in 2000 I think. The crankshaft sensor is located down by the lift pump.

Here is a graphic of the layout of most of the 24V sensors and components.

They are located below the fuel injection pump. Have fun getting that sucker!!

If it's the crank sensor, then none of this applies and I'm just rambling...

If it's the cam position sensor, I can do it with my eyes closed...because I couldn't find any possible way to see it. It took me about twice as long to get it out as it did to put it back in. When you reach below the injection pump, run your hand along the block, towards the cylinders. There's a a group of (three?) wires running into a plug, and an allen head bold holding it in. Wish I could remember what size socket you'll need...

HELP!!!

Hey Barney (or anyone),
On the diagram that's included on your post, it doesn't say "cam shaft sensor" anywhere. Is it possibly #11 - CMP sensor?
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Alright!

What a PAIN in the ***! I swear, they build these new trucks so you CAN"T work on them! Now I know why I always see that one skinny *** mechanic at every dealership. You have to have some skinny hands and arms to work on 90% off this stuff. Here I am crammin' my big ol' paws down under that injector pump. And once I finally got 'em in, I couldn't see or feel a **** thing! But here it is two hours later and the suckers mine!
Thanks for the info. This sure is a great site for shadetree mechanic's like myself.
Oh, and by the way, it is a 3 wire plug and the hex head bolt was 3/16".
Thanks again!
Ron
