Lift Pump----Double checking...
Lift Pump----Double checking...
Hi All,
Well, Unfortunately 2 hours of searching and reading countless posts on the topic has not left me with any solid answer, so here goes...once again...
I just put 20,000 towing miles on my 99 3500 loaded with about 15K.
I know I'll get spanked for this, but I haven't been able to get to much maintainence during this time (moving to another state on a deadline can do that).
Anyway, the Ram has pulled fine, but on my last leg home, pulling an empty 6K GN, the truck *suddenly* lost power. I should say that I had noticed zero loss of power in the previous 20K.
It's the kind of thing where it just about stalls and I have to coast the truck down to 20 mph and then it "catches" and will take off again.
I get off the road and it starts, and idles clean and fine, but as I increase the rev's (in neutral), I get more and more light blue smoke and the engine is feeling (and sounding) ultra-sluggish.
OK, so I'm going to replace the fuel filter, but I have to jump back on the road for another 2000mi, so am I doing the right thing or is anything else suspect that I should address?
Basically the sudden-ness of the problem from fine is seeming more like a failure than a restriction.
Any thoughts?
Thanks
Sean S

If you are unable to check the lift pump pressures I would go ahead and put one on it. Being your truck is a 99 and probably has the original pump on it there is a good chance she's cooked. If your out of warranty then install a new pump before you toast the injection pump which hopefully you haven't done already.
Go to your cummins dealer and have them throw one on before you regret it.
Good Luck and welcome to the site.
