Lack of power

I got a 2001 2500 HO with about 30k on it and it just doesn't seem like it has as much power as it used to. Very slow to accelerate, pushing more boost than it used to in some situations, and it sounds quieter at highway speeds. But fuel mileage has stayed the same. I haven't pulled or hauled anything heavy with it in a while, but I want it working at peak performance for boating/camping season.
I know it is due for a fuel filter (still on the factory one, I know, I negelcting it and should be smacked), but could that alone cause these problems? Think I should check the lift pump? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
-Dave

Re:Lack of power

A new fuel filter might help. I've seen a couple of posts here where somebody said they could tell a difference in power after the filter change. The only way to tell if the lift pump is crapping out on you is to hook up a fuel pressure guage to the truck. Maybe you are just getting used to the truck and that's why it doesn't feel the same as before...
I used to drive a 68 Road Runner 440 as my daily driver. The car ran 11s on the motor. The more I drove around the less powerful it seemed. When I finally bought my first truck and drove it everyday instead, that Road Runner was back to feeling fast again...... Just an idea.....
An Edge box will help also ;D

Re:Lack of power

Thanks a lot guys, I was hoping it would be something that simple. I don't wanna have to deal with DC for a new lift pump (even if it is under warranty), since I do have guages and no other mods, I'm sure they'd gimme a hard time. I can't believe I haven't changed my filter yet, I'm usually **** about taking care of my vehicles. I guess I just keep forgetting about it. Thanks again
-Dave

Re:Lack of power

They tried to void my warranty cause I added gauges. That didn't go over to well.

Re:Lack of power

Big Blue, what argument did the service dept make regarding trying to void your warrenty? Do many other forum members with installed gauges encounter this is situation with their service departments as well? Anyone actually receive positive comments from a dealership service department employee in regards to a gauge install?

Draflaske,

Try a local deale in Paris, Kentucky. Dotson Brothers. They work on our bombed trucks, and never say a thing. They change lots of lift pumps for us.
You could change the filter. Also I seem to remember someone saying that they had their computer reflashed, and that helped. Plus winter blend is still hanging on in certain places that cuts back, plus less mileage. Also,
there is a weep hole that needs to be cleaned someplace. Any questions, just pm me.

I told him that I'm not as dumb as I look and that I know that these lift pumps have a very high failure rate and that I was actually saving him money because if I ran the lift pump with low pressure (8 idle and 0 WOT), that I could blow the VP44 out and that would be expensive. Then he told me to take it off so they could use their own pressure gauge to check it. : After he mocked me about changing it out right in front of him (which I did in 5 mins), I gave it back to him. He then went on how if I add an amp to my truck, they will void warranty. I asked him, "So if my computer dies, your saying that the amp caused it cause the amp does nothing else than just amplify the sound coming from the radio and has nothing to do with the computer?" I then told him about the Magnunson-Moss Act that protects me from this and says that by law, they must prove that the addition of an aftermarket part caused part in question to fail. They finally replaced it and when I picked it up, I handed him a copy of the Act. I then called DC HQ and told him about it and they said that all they wanted was for me to remove it. That way, they aren't responsible for it if it should break. He said that they didn't mind gauges being put on and that that was not grounds for a warranty revoke.

Re:Lack of power

Thanks for sharing that experience, BigBlue. I will be adding gauges to my truck soon and wondered if there would be any effect on my warranty. Sounds like DC is OK with adding gauges (even if that unreasonable service guy is not).

Re:Lack of power

The service department manager in Pullman is GREAT! He usually states "the modification has to be proven to cause the problem before the warranty can be voided" to me each time I discuss a modification in advance with him. He even encouraged me to install the 2" leveling kit and he really likes the gauges, says they're a great idea in his opinion.

We've got a good service dept. here! ;D

Re:Lack of power

I dont think its the winter blend fuel cause I didn't notice this last winter. I'm gonna wait for some decent (dry) weather and change the fuel filter, if that don't help I'll take it to Champion Dodge here in Florence to get the lift pump checked, Where is this weep hole that needs cleaned? I empty the 'breather bottle' at every oil change, its not as messy as that is it? Hate getting all that sludge on my pretty chrome tools.
-Dave

Re:Lack of power

It is by the front cover in front of the fan blades. There is a thread on here that shows it. I will look and find it.

Re:Lack of power

I wonder what this weep hole thing is too. I havent heard of it. BTW, a barbed brass hose splice will end that bottle mess for you right quick. I took mine off after it had made a complete mess of the underside(freaking, trying to find a seal out or somethin you know) take the bottle and cap off the original hose, insert one end of splice, clamp. Find an eighteen inch, or so, piece of hose, slide it on the splice and clamp. I used the bolt hole to attach a conduit clamp to the block, clamping the hose securely with it. I also wire tied the hose to the axle to keep it from movin around too much.

Re:Lack of power

I think the weep hole you are talking about is in the bottom of the water pump, the book says to keep this cleaned out otherwise you won't know if the water pump is leaking.

rob
