KDP and 53 Block Question

I am looking at a beautiful 2001 quad long bed 6spd, I am wondering if the KDP was and issue for the 2001's? I know on my 97 I had to do it, but I am not sure if anything changed. Also, I have read that the 53 were in trucks up to and including 2001. Can anyone say yes or no? I will check the block when I see it, but it is over a 6 hour trip so it would be nice to have an idea before I go. Any pointers other pointers on things I should check would be great.

Thanks,

Paul

The very best thing you can do is search here for KDP and 53 block. You'll pull up numerous threads related to the subject. The other source is Fritz's web site. http://dodgeram.org/

If I remember correctly, the 53 block was not as common past the 2000 model year as before. I have heard the Engine ID plate contains the code that shows which block it is. I could be wrong on that.

The KDP was very uncommon in 01, but I've seen 53 blocks in 01 trucks. I would check the 53 block, then check for fuel pressure by putting a gauge in the fuel filter housing to make sure the LP isn't dead. When my block cracked, Cummins said that there was no id number to tell what it was on the id plate. I asked because I was gonna buy a engine, but the guy couldn't tell me if it was a 53 block, but he had the info from the id tag.

When I had the front end off the engine this year, the dowel was still tight in the block, but the design of the case would allow it to come out if it came loose. I heard there was a revised case for the 24v, and it was installed around 01 or so. But it wouldn't hurt to pull the cover off front and make sure its iin there, or see if its the revised case. I wouldn't mind seeing a pic of these new cases.

My 99 has the revised case on it. Where the dowel pin is it sticks out about 3/8 more than where the blot is that you would bolt the little washer on at. Basicly there is a step up in the case at the pin.
