I dont worry about mine.. You only hear of the few and far between on these forums... Nobody comes on to talk about there great VP44 that has lasted 200k, they only post when they have a problem...

53 blocks for example... All you hear about on here is the cracking of 53 blocks... Nobody posts that there 53 block is still holding... Only posts if it does crack...

3rd gen injectors same thing...

All these trucks and any other vehicle on the road have issues of some kind... Chances are if you take care of your vehicle you will never have a problem

I went through cummins for my kit. It was alot les than $109. When I did mine I called the dealer about it and when they told me the price of the seal kit I aughed at them and hung up. I ended up getting mine through Hoesli Diesel because the parts guy at cummins near me had a hard time looking up the part for some reason. http://www.hoeslidiesel.com/ is their site.

91.5-I freaked out after I bought mine as well, wondered what I got myself into. Read a ton of different things, had to replace my lp, and wash out my radiator-that's it. Truck runs great and agree with all the comments made by everyone else. Pulling approx. 7K up some decent climbs in Northern Utah and truck does great at all speeds with A/C and family members piled in-could easily pull more. After it was bought, questioned whether I should have gone with a competitor then I got in my brother in law's power stroke and almost started laughing.

Yeah, you get the usual suspects reporting (more whining) about their woes, because they are motivated. That's fine.
Folks with satisfaction just don't post much.
You did good with the '99 DRW. Get a big line relocation kit or a FASS. If you stay with the Carter, buy a spare L.P. and keep it in the truck. Do install a set of gages: fuel pressure, a.t. trans temp gage, turbo boost gage. If you don't do a big bomb, the trans should last (if you keep it cool).
**OPINION****My personal suspicion is that the best-of-the-best Cummins powered Dodges were built from 2001-2002. Especially the '01.5-'02's. Why?
Rear disc brakes.
Dana 80 with 35 spline axles (however, GM uses a 37 spline D-80)
NV-5600 with new larger 1-3/8" input spline shaft. 26,000 lb. capacity.
High Output with 505 lb ft. TQ, 245 H.P. (only available with the NV-5600)
The best miles per gallon tradeoff per amount of power.
Power/MPG....MPG/Power.
After these years, the power and TQ were upped, but at what cost? MPG dropped off, some years precipitously. Other little woes crept in.
The 12v Cummins are truly the MPG kings, with a much more reliable mechanical injection system, but you have a lot less HP and TQ. 160HP?
Yes, maybe because I have one and see the value, the '01-'02's are the ticket.
Mine: 112K mi. One lift pump(@90K mi), now Big Line relocated. Solid Steel steering brace. What a difference! Got a much better air filter system. Replaced batteries (OEM's went 80 months!) Rancho replacement shocks. On 3d set of tires. I haul 16,500 lbs. around occasionally, get 15 MPG with load (on the flat, no wind).
I can't think of anything else that went south.
If you read this site enough, you'll conclude I'm living on borrowed time.
regards, as always, jefe

The Cummins block way outperforms the rest of this vehicle. I have 87k and have put 3grand in repairs. I have a toyota with 227k and no repairs. I think my tranny is going now its starting to slip more and I need a trac bar. Love cummins, not happy with dodge.

With 226,000 + miles I am more than satsified. Had my share of expensive repairs this year, but figure it was time. One of the clues for me is in Sikeston Missouri. I visit a very large auction with lots of big farmer buyers and traders. These big dog operators use Dodges and hugh trailers by a factor of over 10 to one over GM and Ford combined. Now the non haulers have a normal mix of Fords, Chevys, and Dodges. I have seen more than one Chebby struggling with a trailer. One left out on top of a Large gooseneck with a old Dodge pulling. I sort of think the word is there in the purchasing for heavy duty service. In defense of the competion, they do have pretty interiors and may ride some better if not pulling a load. JMHO and I believe a very large number of heavy users.

In December i will have owned my truck for 2 years and i have already drove 50,000 miles on my girl. Not once has this truck left me stranded on the side of the freeway! Yes i installed a commander and discovered my fuel pressure was low so i replaced the fuel system with a fass. But i still drove 2,000 miles with low fuel pressure until i had a free weekend to do the install. I've done brakes, tires, track bar, tie rods, and lots of other things but mechanically my truck hasn't let me down. Take care of your truck and i'm sure she'll rattle down the freeway for miles and miles.

I am perfectly pleased with my 01.5 that now has 230k on the odometer. Original VP44 still going strong! I did replace the Carter with a Raptor 100 which took care of my fuel pressure problems. Overall this has been a great truck for me.

well i like my truck also but i have figured it up and in the four years i have had it, i have put a little over 5 grand in repairs, this includes the vp, tranny, complete front end, dash, starter, hubs, and other things. this does not include routine maintenance. i bought it at 100k and it now has 185k. to compare, my dads 99 f250 has 323k on it and he has put a torque converter, alternator, water pump and rebuilt his front end. it seems to be holding up better than mine. however, he has had a couple of leaks from the fuel sys. and i can say that mine is alot easier to work on which is good. now these trucks both pull a tractor and 16ft. trailer 2-3 times per wk. my 93f-150 with the 300i-6 has 352k and still runs great without ever going into the motor. i have put a tranny,, and mulitple alternators until getting a built one, plus complete a/c rebuild. I drove it during my teenage years and have pulled extremly heavy loads with it such as a 30ft. camper and the same tractor and trailer as i do with the cummins. it does not pull it as well of course, but i can honestly say, i have been much more pleased with the overall performance of it than with the dodge. it seems that heavy duty just means more money for parts to me. but all that being said i do still love my dodge and plan on running it at least 500k more.

my 2002 had a major redo at 80,000 for the replacement of ball joints ujoints vp lp shocks radio lumbar support motor steering box and tie rods. the last 120000 has been somewhat uneventful with the exception of the replacement lp and heater motor resistor, tires another driveshaft ujoint. Have run about 80000 with edgeEZ and 4" exhaust.

I've got my 98 Dodge and just got out of a 2000 Powerstroke work truck.
I hate to say it because I like the Cummins, but the Dodge has cost way more to keep on the road than the the Ford by a wide margin. 181 K on the Dodge and 375K on the Ford.
Out of all the ailments that you hear about, the Dodge has had them all except for the 53 Block cracking (knock on wood).
I will never buy another Dodge.

If you have a 98.5 dodge....call it a nightmare, with a funky CPS, a faulty NV45, a list of service bulletins and recalls to the moon,
A leaking crankcase overboard system that should be on a model T.
Vacuum operated 4WD that will fail when you need it the most.
A front axle marginal from factory -with the inability to go dwn the road semi straight with out a lot of modifications
Head LT swithches that are sure to go bad every few years.
brakes that dont brake
lift pumps that wont lift and burn out the VP 44
And I am not done but to the pt

Some luv these things..I put up with mine as I am buried money wise.
In the box of what is offered it is the best...but a sloppy best as it could have been so much better
