Input on auto trans
Input on auto trans
Just wanted to get some feedback on what some of you guys think. I have added edge EZ (not Comp) and 275 injectors and now I've got my eye on Rip's 4" exhaust (This is starting to become an addiction!) I have not made any changes to the stock automatic and am looking for input whether its better to 1.) ride out the stock trans until it goes ( still got 88,000 on warranty, but the dealer might start pokin around if he sees the 4" exhaust) 2.) change TC, valve body, pan, now about $1500.00 + labor or 3.) go right to bulletproof trans now
about $3000.00- 3500.00 + labor
Tim
Re:Input on auto trans
Do it now or do it later, with those mods, and the future mods, a full blown tranny will be needed. Just an EZ or 275's and it might live a while. Anymore than that and you are asking for trouble. Question is, do you want to upgrade on your terms or when you are 150 miles from some small town on the side of the road?

Dave
Re:Input on auto trans
I've got a Comp on mine with the wire hooked up. Never ran it above three and only did that a couple of times. I just slipped my TC for the first time on Fri. pulling a four wheeler trailer with the Comp on 1x3. Get the bulletproof.
Re:Input on auto trans
thanks everyone. What are your thoughts as far as brand, ATS, Suncoast or others? Does anyone know someone on the East coast driving distance from RI?

I have ATS and like it! ;D

275's and the EZ will kill your tranny.
I know, I had that combination and could slip my converter on command, besides that stock auto starting acting funny with the addition of 275 injectors.

I would suggest since you have low miles, upgrading the tranny with the Triplelok converter and ATS valve body along with any internals that need upgrading (inspection).

--Justin

I am going to go with DTT. They just speak my language. Now that may be slurred, mumbling and full of swear words, but it works.

I have never seen a DTT fail, but I cannot say that about the other guys.

Whatever you get, I'm sure you'll be happy.

Dave
Re:Input on auto trans
I put 4K on my stock auto with an EZ with no problems, however I never towed. During the summers I spend lots of time out in the eastern oregon desert and couldnt be worring about fragging the tranny. I went with a DTT exchange transmisson that Rip Rook and I installed. So far I'm very pleased with the results, made the truck fun again.

As was said earlier, make it bulletproof.
Re:Input on auto trans
I just went to the DTT, Suncoast and ATS websites and am more confused than ever. They all sound good, but the ATS & Suncoast have the billet torque converters instead of the stamped that DTT uses. ATS has the best warranty of all, but is also the most expensive when it comes to the individual components.
Justin, I like the idea of replacing just the TC and valve body as I only have 12K on my truck instead of swapping for a whole unit. Even though its rebuilt, I am swapping a low mileage core for one that has ????? miles on it. Doesn't seem right to me. Any drawbacks?
Thanks
Tim

Re:Input on auto trans
tlea7 SUncoast has the better warrenty. 3 years unlimited milage. I your new Suncoast should ever blow up they will next day air you one. Also check into the shipping charges. I found that ATS was about $100 dollars higher. I decided on suncoast. It will be here in a couple of days. By buddy just installed one on his powercrap dully and loves it. As far as swapping trannys or new valvebody and TC I would go with new tranny. With the new tranny you will get you extra clutches in it ware as the stock one you wont.

Just thoght I sould muddy the water more.
Re:Input on auto trans
Muddy the water is right, I can't even see the bottom anymore!
I emailed Scott @ Massdiesel, he deals w/DTT. I do like the idea of having an address I can drive to (or be towed to) if I ever have a problem. Still checkin' all of them out though.
Tim
