How to get the codes......

Ok, I am going up to PA this weekend to hopefull pick up my truck. Now I do want to run the codes before I buy it. What do I have to do? If it's my understanding you just turn the key 3 times but do not start it and it will show the codes in the digital odometer box correct? Is this correct? Also what are the codes that are most important so I can write them down and take them with me? And also I have a feeling that the truck is a 53 block but I am going to inspect it myself. The owner said it says 23 and it has some other smaller numbers on the block also. I called Cummins and asked them about the 53 block and he told me that not all 53 blocks are bad. It's just that some came off of the line with defective castings. He said just make sure that the block does not have a thin location in it or a indented oval in it right around the #5 cylinder below the freeze plugs. Does this all sound right to you? Anything else I should look at on this truck? I am putting out $20K and I want a good truck.

BTW here is the info on it.....

01 2500, 6-speed, SB, 106K, 01.5, Lariame package............

Thanks guys!!!!

Paul is a soon to be CTD nut. Hopefully.............

That's the correct method for the key trick... the biggie is P0216. It's worth noting that not all codes will necessarily be displayed in the odometer. It might be worth your time to see if you can borrow a code reader from a member here. If it has a P1693 that would indicate codes stored somewhere.

you can get a full code list at http://www.madselectronics.com/downl...3UserGuide.pdf

I would seriously doubt that an '01 would have a 53 block (mostly '98 and '99s). If it is you would have a really large (over 1 inch high) 53 just under the vp44 and above the oil pan flange.
