Help Diagnosing Fluid Leak
Help Diagnosing Fluid Leak
On right side, right next to fan pulley. There's some kind of cover with a round, slightly larger than a puck thing on it and what looks like an overflow tube of some sort coming out of that. Puck thing has a little fluid on it and overflow tube appears to be leaking fluid. Kind of a thick fluid, black and green. Yesterday, left about 1/8 - 1/4 cup on the ground. After parking it last night there's only about 3 drops.
I've spent about $12,000 repairing various pieces and parts of this truck since I got it in 2004 -- replaced ECM, rebuilt front end, 2 injection pumps, brakes, etc. etc. etc. Most of which was done by professional mechanics. I know I could have saved some money doing these repairs myself but while I enjoy working on vehicles my time is better spent running my business. Does this seem right? I gotta say it hurts. Am I about to spend another small fortune on this leak? I'm not sure I can take it anymore.
99' SLT 4" Bullydog exhaust, BAF intake, Gauges, 180,000 miles (I'm not as good at bragging as others are. It's a work truck, what can I say.)

Are you looking at the breather assembly?
It is located directly ahead of the injection pump and has a hose that comes out straight up, then curves over and down to the lower front of the engine. It may or may not have a bottle on the end of it.

Have you checked to see if there is either oil in your coolant or coolant in your oil?
If you are looking at the breather...which is what it sounds like, it is a vent to the crankcase so oil vapors can escape...If there is a lot coming out and it is green there may be a problem.
Which way is the tube pointing? It should be pointing up and curve down.
I am sorry it has been such a hassle!

Yes, the tube does curve up and then back down again and exits just above the steering thingie. No bottle on the end. The fluid seems equal parts green and black. The green is not neon green like anti-freeze but more like olive green. The consistency of it is thick like gear oil not thin like either anti-freeze or motor oil.
If it is in fact the breather and it is oil and coolant, what am I looking at here? I may need to start doing these repairs myself. I love my truck and want to drive it at least until my kids graduate from high school, about 10 more years. It's been one thing after another for the last year or so.
