Hard to get into 4x4

Has anyone else had problems getting there rig into four wheel drive? Mine is so hard it takes two hands to get it in. Then it started grinding and wouldn't go in. So dealer rebuilt it.....same thing, two hands to get it in the first time everyday, after that it is easier unless you don't put it in for a while. Then the thing started grinding again. Took it back and they rebuilt it again.....to no prevail, it is just as hard to pull in now if not harder. My 99 gasser wasn't like this.

You need to just give it a good hard snap and it will go right in. If you try to apply gentle pressure it wont work. Mine does the same thing if I try to put it in gentley.

I don't know what year you have (might want to fill out your signature) but my '05 is casual to get into 4WD high. I've done it in the >middle< of a slide, even. Sure beats getting out of my old truck and turning the front hubs.

Both my 94 and 98.5 easily and smoothly shift through all the detents in the T-case........I keep the pivots on the shifter linkage thoroughly lubed and have never had a problem.......If the linkage operates smoothly, you may have a slightly bent shift fork or the fork may be missing a plastic clip...........hopefully your shifter linkage just needs to be cleaned up and lubed.

I shift mine smoothly in to 4 hi at any speed less than 50 mph. Going to 4 lo I stop and put tranny in neutral, pop it right in.

The truck is a 2001. I had a 1999 gasser that worked easily. Hurt my arm the other day yanking hard at it and it didn't go, got it in on the second try.

Angry

Wow my arm hurts. I tried yanking it in as hard and fast as I could, and it didn't go, so I planted my feet on the floor boards and pulled while pushing with my feet. After 1 1/2-2 seconds it went in, but I hurt. Think I will have to call the dealer and take it back again. I have taken it to the dealer 5 times now over this transfer case. All within a month and a half!!! First three times was because of leaks, last 2 times it got rebuilt. First rebuild they say they replaced everything except the main gears.(Sincronizers were out, just grind when you try to put it in 4x4). When I got it back it was so hard to pull in, that it did the same thing after putting it in and out of fourwheel a bunch of times in one day. They are telling me not to put it in while spinning the rear wheels, but I don't. This is the 6th 4x4 I have owned and have never had problems before. In fact I traded in a 1999 Dodge 4x4 for this truck with the same type 4x4 system and there was nothing wrong with it.

My 01 went in hard a while back but it was cold and I haven't had it in 4 wheel for quite a while. I slowed down and it went right in. I put it back into 2 wheel for a while and back into 4 wheel. It worked fine after that.

Well I just got back from the dealer. The mechanic that worked on it took it for a drive and he was able to get it into 4x4. Figures! Then he said it is no harder than any other one he has tryed. He tells me I gotta put it in while cruising not under load and not while off excelleration and not while parked. Bullcrap. Shift on the fly is supposed to be shift on the fly. I am so mad I am about ready to sell the thing.

Well, I kinda agree with your mechanic. When I shift into 4x I put the tranny in neutral and step on the clutch. It goes in or out smooth as butter. You should never try to shift it with a load on the drive train.

accelerate to around 25, quickly let off go pedal and shift fast,no pause. goes in and out like butter this way. had 4 other 4wd vehicles before this one and they all acted the same way. best shift procedure for me was to use the one i describe.

Mine is hard to shift as well, but it will go with one quick hard pull, weather on the throtel or coasting.

Check your tires, if they are uneavenilly worne, or not all have the same mileage, it may load up your drive train...

Would you shift your tranny hard under load without a clutch? Glad it's not my truck.

Unhappy

It has new tires all around. Seems to go in a lot easier when I am going real slow.... like 5-10mph. It is dissapointing. This is the 6th 4x4 I've owned and never have I had this much trouble.
