Got Boost?

Installed my boost gauge over the weekend using a tapped bolt. At WOT i'm seeing 16.5, maybe 17 lbs of boost, I believe my '99 auto should be set to 18 from the factory, correct? Should I be concerned about my missing pound of boost? <br><br>I would guess that I might have a slight leak in my plumbing somewhere. I put thread tape on all the joints except the tapped bolt itself, where it screws into the intake manifold. Is this a problem? <br><br>One more thing, I think I have an HY35 turbo, not HX35, is this correct?<br><br>thanks-

Re:Got Boost?

I had to get the RPM up, along with WOT to get to 19 with mine. Even with my boost ellbow in there if I turn my box off I get 19 lbs of boost because I wasn't getting enough fuel to make it go higher. I have not tried blocking the boost elbow yet. :<br><br>Your 99 should have an HX-35. Mine does. BE glad you don't have the HY.<br><br>Chris

Re:Got Boost?

What's wrong with the HY? Almost instant spoolup. I push 30 psi out of mine whether Comp is on or off. I used to push 35 but I backed it off cause I didn't need that much boost. A year later and god only knows how many barkings, it is still in perfect shape. No shaft play or anything. Now. With that said. I wouldn't worry bout that one psi. I hit 22 psi dead stock on my truck (used to be around 17-19 though). And no overboost code either. Oh well.

Re:Got Boost?

The little tag on the compressor side of the turbo will tell you the type and size of the outlet.

Re:Got Boost?

I'm just using a turnbuckle. Mine is set loose so I don't push to much boost. I used to push mine to 35-38 with no problem (and I rag the crap out of my truck). If I had to do it again, I'd get the turbo master. But it wasn't out when I went to do mine. Besides, the turn buckle is cheap and easy.

Re:Got Boost?

Thanks for the responses everybody. The truck seems to run great so I won't worry about the 1 psi. <br><br>As for the HY vs. HX, I was under the impression that all autos (at least 2nd gen 24V) got the HY, but apparently I am mistaken. So what is the determining factor as to which truck(s) have HY's and which have HX's? [undecided]<br><br>It is quite possible that I just have all my info mixed up. I read so much on this site and elsewhere, that it's hard to keep everything straight. <br><br>

Just got my boost/egt from Geno's on last night and am at 19psi. Will put the turnbuckle on tonight probably. Here is the turnbuckle picture off of the EDGE site.

Re:Got Boost?

I have the Edge EZ and the boost elbow from edge products and was told I should see about 27, yet the most I have gotten so far is 24 ??? Is there something else I can do to increase a little? I have the NV4500 so turnbuckle isnt necessary (so I am told)

Re:Got Boost?

Up the fuel. ;D If you are able to use the boost elbow, then you don't need the turnbuckle. Call Edge if you want. They may send you a new fitting. Check for any leaks on the rubber clamps leading from the turbo to the intercooler and back out.

Re:Got Boost?

Yeah I have been trying to get my hands on a fuel pressure guage to check it and cant seem to find one locally....so I am probably gonna have to order one off the net. Any recomendations on where to get a basic mechanical one for under hood testing?
