Getting Transfer Case Looked At...

I posted a few weeks ago that I couldn't shift into 4wd or even neutral with the transfer case shifter unless I was sitting still. I talked to a mechanic that I trust who told me to take it apart and reinstall it would be around $300 plus any parts he had to buy. He said that since I didn't off road my truck much or abuse it that it was probably simple and wouldn't need much. Since I have 140,000 on the truck and don't want to be fixing something else down the road should I insist that he replace the chain or if it doesn't look bad is it a waste? He said he usually just replaced whatever looked to be worn or bad and only the chain if it was stretched.

Well, they called today and said the transfer case was fine and nothing was wrong with it. They are saying the problem was that the clutch wasn't fully disengaging. They said I didn't notice it when shifting gears because the transmissions synchronizers took up the speed difference. They are replacing the clutch hydraulic kit with the factory one since I had put on an after market slave cylinder a while back which is slightly larger. He said if that didn't work it may be my clutch which I thought was unlikely. Does all this sound right?

You should be able to shift into 4wd "On The Fly"......

Your clutch not releasing could be a seperate issue you would usually notice that it is difficult to get into 1'st or reverse. But that shouldn't affect your t-case operation as it is designed to shift into 4wd even when the vehicle is moving.

Ok. Kinda wondering now. I mentioned to him that what he was saying about the clutch dragging didn't make sense and he hum hawed around and said he would go look at it again. I am starting to think he isn't too familiar with 4wd vehicles. He is an honest guy though which is why I went to him.
