fuel mileage
I have been reading where some of you are getting 18-20 miles to a gallon, and the best I seem to do is about 16.5 to and from work. Mostly flat ground roughly 20 miles round trip.
Any addvice would be appreciated. Thanks, cowboy

What rear end do you have?
4.10 gets worse mileage than the 3.55.
Is it winter where you're at (no location next to your name)
Winter fuel on top of extended idleing and cold fluids will also contribute to mileage.
Is your foot heavy? that will contribute as well.
Dirty fuel filter, dirty air filter, dirty IAT (intake air temp) sensor are the usual causes.
I am currently getting 13-14 average.
3.55 rear, auto tranny, winter fuel, winter weather, big tires and the occasional heavy foot are my problems.

I" try" not too have a heavy foot, right now it is winter(NC) and my truck is geared 355. I have cleaned the air filter and the IAT,and the fuel filter is changed pretty regular.

Tire pressure and aleinment are also standard procedure checks.I got improvement with 4 in exhaust and amsoil in the moyor and diffs. This combo dropped my RPMs at 65mph from 2000/2100 to 15/1600. I also dropped my tailgate. I know a guy with your truck, stock tires and he said he gets 22 highway. Iys his third ctd and he says subtract 1-2mpg 4x4, 2-3 mpg auto and 1-2mpg dually. I'd say he is about right. I also say it isn't magic, if two same/same trucks driven bt the same driver yeild different results, have fun doing the homework, somethings dryin' or dragin'! LOL STY

Just wanted to say hi to a fellow North Carolinean, I'm originally from Gastonia where the Freightliner plant is located, anyway,do check your rearend to see if it is a 4.10, or a 3.55, rearend/frontend lube, tranny lube I usually average around 18.5-19 mpg to work and back, 50 mile round trip and I also use Stanadyne proformance formula every fill-up, Good luck getting your mpg up !

Another thing if your comute is only 20 miles with that kind of driving times man your engine is probably not reaching a good operating temp for a very short period of time the computer is still in warmup mode. I guess .

18.7 the last tank, synthetic lubes in everything.
Everything else stock except tires. I use Power Service for a fuel additive. This is going to work and back, no freeway, never over 55.

I am beginning to believe the hype about 18+ mpg is a load of crap....Now a single cab, manual shift,2wd truck driving 55 may get 20 mpg going down hill. I think a lot of this mpg talk is people trying to one up each other. It seems when someone says they get 19, the next person gets 19.5, and the next person get 20 and so on. Just a general observation.

Theres a lot of what ifs in the MPG, my 99, if i grandma it, the overhead says all time high of 22.1, stock truck, usually gets about 20 or so, But there not stock tires, hell when we bought the truck it said it got 30+ Im like ***, and never did the math , usually got 650 MPT, But it also drove great back then, when it shifted into overdrive the rpms dropped the rear went sank down and the truck took off, TONS of power ( so it felt pry wasnt though) But if i drive the truck and have fun with it, In town i get anywhere from 13-15 and highway anywhere from 16s to 19, depending on how far its going. and how im driving.
One thing i like about my 360 gasser, Might only get 10 mpg but it always gets 10 mpg haha. Doesnt matter in town outa town 60 or 70 :P

I average about 16-17, got 19 one time when i never got over 70, most of the time i tend to drive closer to 85. I have a set of 305/70 wrangler at/s and the microtuner set at 50hp. And i doubt the 200 lb grille guard i have helps much either. Oh yeah, and my overhead shows an average of 21 whenever my math shows 16.5.

I average 18.5 MPG. Now if my wife drives the truck the milage goes down to 16.6 MPG. I like the fact she likes to have fun with the truck . I live in the hills so I have all types of driving conditions, stop and go, downhill, and the fuel guzzling up hill here in California. I use my truck to go to work which is 16 miles away using surface streets and 12 miles of freeway. My rear end ratio is 3.7. At 2000 RPMs the speedo shows 72 MPH.

Alot of things influence your milage. 2 or 4 wheel drive, standard or auto, single or dual wheel. Quality of fuel, winter fuel. If you've got a 4x4 auto 3500, then you'll never see 20 mpg. Our 3500 with a 6 speed and 4.10 gears will get 19 when it's running without a trailer or load, if it's kept at 65, which is 2000 rpm's. Also be aware that if you've gone up in tire size, your odometer will be running slower than it should. So you'll actually go more miles than it reads. Depending on how much taller you've gone this could have a large effect on mileage if you figure it from the odometer.
