front wheel bearing repack
front wheel bearing repack
can a person repack the front wheel bearings on the 99-02 (03)4x4 axel? and is it very difficult? I'm doing a little "comparison shopping" and seeing some problems in the other brand I'm interested in.

Re:front wheel bearing repack
I had seperated my front hub by accident and cleaned the bearings and repacked them. Then pressed the two pcs back togther and now have about 5000+ miles on them. I have some pics but here is a link to my website where I talk about this process.<br>Ricki<br><br><br>http://www.geocities.com/palmerlives...ubService.html<br><br><br>link that shows the bearings<br>http://www.geocities.com/palmerlivestock/bearings.html<br><br>
Re:front wheel bearing repack
Thanks for the reply Cattle Hauler! Thanks for the link. I have a couple questions<br>1. Is there any type of "preload" that you had to do with that bearing, or was it a fool proof press together and all parts machined to fit?<br>2. Is that "watery grease" in that one picture or some sort of special grease? (has the truck been in water?)<br>It looks like the biggest difficulty would be in getting the bearing separated.<br>Thanks

Re:front wheel bearing repack
Keep in mind that these hobs are not designed to come apart and be repacked. Mine seperated while trying to get the rotor/hub assembly off the wheel spindle. I did not have to money to buy a new 400.00 hub, so I cleaned the bearing and repacked and had to use a manual press to press the two pcs back together. I used brake cleaner to clean the bearings and then repacked with grease.

Thanks for the replies. You and your page have been a great help but I am still scraching my head wondering why manufacturers are going the "modular" route in sealing those bearings for life.
Re:front wheel bearing repack
Ok I don't yet have the service manual, only the Haynes. I have over 150,000 on the truck and common sense tells me that maintenance on the front wheel bearings is necessary. What is the recommendation? Can you add bearing grease? I need to pull them down, repack them, etc. Are the bearings replaceable? I can't have a front wheel lock up on the road. Help here is appreciated. If it is a major process and must be pressed back together that is not a problem, I can handle that but have not been able to find any information on the 4wd wheel bearings. I certainly don't feel like replacing 400+ in hubs. Final question, does the service manual have maintenance info on them?
Re:front wheel bearing repack
I think those guys over at the ford site are stuffing grease in the abs hole. (if your truck has one) I think I saw something that looked like a abs wire in one of Rickie's photo's..... just a thought ..

Re:front wheel bearing repack
The front hub on our trucks are not designed to be repacked. But I guess you could add thou the abs hole but that hole is kinda of small. But I would rather try to add grease then buy another 400.00 hub.<br>These hub are suppose to be manit free :
<br>I don't think they will be easy to pull the hub apart, but was easy to press back together.

Re:front wheel bearing repack
I just had both replaced back in September. It was pricy :'( :'(. It cost 700.00 for the entire front. A local garage did the work. Of course after I paid the bill they told me that I could have up graded to the 2002 model that can be worked on with no trouble. My dad was tickled because he has a 2002. I love my 99. So do what you want, but their is a solution to the Dodge MADNESS
