Front axle Problem???

I did ask this qustion sometime ago, and did not get much of a resopnse. I asked what was causing a kind of grating/vibration/ non meshing noise (chatter) on take off from standstill. It is quite pronounced when you start off in 1st or 2nd, not too sure if it continues as you gsther speed because the sound of the engine drowns out any other noise.

I have also noticed on the odd occasion when in 4x4 in reverse and got right hand lock on there is sometime a klunk sound every revolution of the wheel, but not always, but never in forward 4x4.

I put the truck on a rolling road today just to see if the problem was further back from the front axle, took off in first and second at low revs same as normal and no noise, very quite, I was unable to try it out in 4x4. I was wondering whether the back lash is set right, may be it's the UJ's on the front prop that are warn, but i can't feel or see any slack when i bump it back and forth in gear. It feels as if there is too much slack in the drive train on take off. I wa wondering if this is a common problem as i have heard this on at least two other 2500's Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I may be wrong and it's a knackered throw out bearing or may be a loose or broken spring on the clutch plate, but the clutch seems ok. Ade.

a friend of mine says it sounds like an input shaft bearing, would that be a fair assumption, is this a common problem??

Sorry i can't help much. But some of the questions asked seem too tough to guess what could be wrong. I Know the engine noise makes it impossible to locate a strange sound. I would use a leverage bar of some kind to really check them U joints. side to side ,in and out, up and down.any movement in the cups and they need changed.

With the engine off and brake on, truck in gear, turn the drive shaft and check the play.May have to jack the front up and check the bearings for smoothness also. How are the fluid levels in the tranny and transfer, rearends?

Always start with the simple and do a thorough check.Just keep ruleing components out and going down the line.

My 1998 w/auto acted similar to that, it was the clutches in the rear end. For some reason I had to change oil every 10-20k, and naturally put the additive. Just adding the additive helped, but I wasn't comfortable with that, and wound up pulling the cover, looking for a problem, thus changing the oil.
