Fluids/Filters

I was wonderin, I recently purchased and 01 CTD w/ only 39k (original miles) on it. Im quite new to the diesel world, being that all I've driven my whole life is gassers. The fella that owned it before me said that he changed the oil everk 3000 miles, that seems like overkill according to other CTD owners and friends of mine. I'm trying to figure out what filters I should change and what fluids I should flush and replace.
Thanks

Use the search function and you'll find hours of reading on fluid changes.

Oil every 5K
Fuel filters every 10-15K (depending on your fuel supply)

Get your filters from a Cummins shop, much cheaper than the dealer.

You are going to get a lot of opinions here, but I intend to keep mine for a long time. I use synthetics just switched from Mobil 1 to Royal Purple and Baldwin filters. I really feel those Baldwin filters are hi quality. I am getting ready to put synthetic RP in my differentials and transfer case. Even with synthetics I don't go over 6000 miles. You gotta get the soot out. I plan on getting an oil centrifuge later "Spinner II" maybe with it and synthetic I might do the oil testing route and extend my changes.

Oil- 5K. Delo 400 15W40 in the summer, Rotella 5W40 Synthetic in the winter. Wix Filters.

AT- Drop pan, change filter, refill with the new "licensed by Chrysler" Valvoline ATF+4. (About $4/qt) Install an Universal Drain Plug in the pan. Drain and Refill every 15K, drop pan and change filter every 30K. If you use your truck for heavy towing, use the new Mobil 1 ATF, which is recommended by ExxonMobil for ATF+4. Use the same interval for the Mobil 1 ATF. If you're still under warranty, only use the Chrysler "approved" ATF+4 products.

Diffs- Redline 75W90 in the front and rear at the recommended drain intervals if you're still under warranty. Once out-of-warranty, change every 30K and use 75W140 in the back for better protection. Both Redline 75W90 and 75W140 can be had for about $8/qt shipped from myoilshop.com.

T-Case= Change every 30K with an ATF+4 fluid

Well i have 180 K on my ride

I use nothing but Rotella 15W-40, Baldwin filters, Stanadyne fuel additive. My fliters are either fleetgard, or baldwin, I dont buy anything else. I change oil every 5000-7000 miles, and I change the fuel filter every 15000 miles. Which reminds me its due as in now with me lol!!

Air filter (just tossin this one out) i change every other oil change. I went with a K&N but found little chunks of steel in my turbo so went awy from it.

Differentials, I run 75W90 in the front and rear, I know i need better fluids, but i will be goin to synthetics ASAP...

Transfer case. every other oil change, or every 3 months i change out the fluid in mine. My 4wd works flawlessly! I also change it before deer season and after. My truck sees alot of sand 4wd use..

Is it tough to change T-case? I ought to do mine. I had it up on a lift and noticed the front D/L had a leaky seal. Dad says its easy to fix that though. Im getting ready to change front diff oil to synthetic. 75w - 90. or maybe 75 - 140. anyhow, hows that T-case oil change go?

T-case-open drain hole, empty, re fit plug, re fill case with ATF.
(remove the skid plate if ya want to drain it easy)

The front diff does not need a 75-140.
Its not like a rear that will see miles and miles and miles pulling a 5th wheel or something.
The 75-90 syn fluids are really good fluids that only a few years ago were state of the art top of the line rear severe service.

DITTO - With one exception. In most areas of CA, you really don't need to change over to syn in the winter. If temps stay above 20 overnight in the winter, dino all year round will be fine.

THANKS PIG! You saved me a lot of typing!

Thanks for the input, y'all. I didnt even realize that you need to change the transfer case fluid! As far as the easy flow oil drain, there's a fella on here that has one for sale for $15, quite reasonable. Do you leave the 'easy flow oil drain' in there or do you take it out and put it in only if you need it to change the oil???

leave it in. i like mine a lot. not like pulling the plug was too tough, but there are a good number of stories about stripping the pan and such.

I was just recently reading elsewhere that auto parts stores are starting to get atf-4. I believe there was a guy who worked at an Auto Palace that said his store was just getting it. You may have to ask for it specifically.

amsoil

amsoil for at and transfer case baldwin filters are great .i have 108k on mine and it works much better with amsoil in the at than regular atf. amsoil meets and exceeds all d/c requiements for warranty issues and your tranny will run cooler and stay cooler longer than with regular atf.i also use amsoil grease in the rear diff and would use their oil in the engine if i didn't have free life time oil change. i change my eng oil every three k ,fuel filter every 10k.
