Re:It finally happened - Injection pump horror!!

Oh me oh my, this really blows. I didn't realize how much I missed my truck until I had to drive my Mom's Kia Sportage to work yesterday. What fun that was. I didn't hear the end of it. Especially how they laughed when I pulled up. They said it looked like I was bent over with neck pain. Well, I just can't fit so well in smaller cars. I need something good to get them back. :

Take the Kia in to a muffler shop and have them put one of those HUGE tail pipes on it. I hear they are good for a 100 horses ;D Then you could dare your fellow employees to laugh at you

After the pump is installed. Hook up the Comp and give them a good dose of smoke. That should make them be :-X.

Was the truck acting out of the norm before the pump finally quit? Any stumbling or hard starting at all?

Re:It finally happened - Injection pump horror!!

It's been hard starting when warm for about 2 months now. Was fine when cold, but real bad sometimes when warm. I knew it was going just because it was getting progressively worse. Sure enough, it died while I was sitting at a light. I got it started once, got into a parking lot and that was all she wrote. Dealer told me today that the pump is on the way, and the truck should be done by next Wed.

Once the dealer stopped [censored] me around about my FP gauge and warranty, they ordered the pump and got it in in a day and installed it in about an hour. Had the truck for a week though. : At least you didn't have the wire hooked up.

My theory is the lift pump dies and the VP cavitates itself to pieces. THoughts???

Man whats with this anyway???

Sorry about your luck Jack. :-[

J-eh
[/quote]

Thats the theory I got from Diesel Dynamics when I visited them last week. For a short time, apparently the VP44 will create enough pressure differential to move fuel, but then self distruct. the truck will actually run with a dead lift pump during this time.

Re:It finally happened - Injection pump horror!!

I think that's probably what happened to mine. I talked to the dealer today and they got the pump early, so I won't be driving the Kia Sportage anymore after tomorrow. Can't wait!

Re:It finally happened - Injection pump horror!!

OK, I guess I'm confused. I didn't realize there was a difference between the Lift Pump and the injection pump.

Would someone be so kind as to explain it a little better for me???

Over the past couple weeks, it feels as though my truck has begun to loose power, almost as if it were defueling. All of my temps have always been fine, and my clutch isn't slipping, but I HAVE been running the Comp on 5x5 for 2 months straight...

--Phillip

PS - Sorry about the post Hijack... :-[

Re:It finally happened - Injection pump horror!!

DD, the lift pump is merely a low pressure fuel pump to feed the injection pump. It's located on the side of the block, same side as the injection pump, and if you bump the starter you'll be able to hear it whirring away for about 30 seconds or so. If you look while the hood is open, it's easy to track down it's exact location.

-Tom-

ISB components and locations.
the "Lift Pump" or Transfer pump, brings fuel from the tank to supply the injection pump with enough fuel for running the engine, and cooling the injection pump.

1. Fuel Transfer (Lift) Pump
2. Fuel Return Line (to Fuel Tank)
3. Fuel Supply Line (Low Pressure, to Engine)
4. Fuel Heater
5. Water-in-Fuel (WIF) Sensor
6. Fuel FilterlWater Separator
7. IA T Sensor
8. Map (Boost) Sensor
9. Fuel Drain Manifold
10. CKP Sensor
11. CMP Sensor
12. Overflow Valve
13. Drain Valve
14. Fuel Pressure Test Points
15. ECM
16. ECT Sensor
17. Fuel Injection Pump
18. Throttle Lever Bell Crank and Apps
19, High-Pressure Fuel Lines
20. Fuel Injectors
21. Fuel Heater Temperature Sensor (Thermostat)
22. Oil Pressure Sensor
23. Fuel Injector Connector
24. Drain Tube
25. Intake Manifold Air Heater/Elements

Awesome Diagram, thanks...

So which pump is the more common failure? The lift pump?

I haven't done a whole lot of reading on my motor yet, I've always been a "Gas" (PUKE) guy until my Dodge, and now I'm behind the curve.

I barrowed a FP Guage since I dont have one in the cab, YET. Is there a fuel rail that I can just "tap" to check the pressure?

Thanks!

--Phillip
100% smarter after this post.
