It finally happened - Injection pump horror!!
Well guys, it finally happened. I knew it would happen, I just didn't know when. So I'm driving down the road, all is good, truck is running great. I get to a light, and it starts idling up and down. 800-600-800-600-800-600, then DEAD. I mean, it was so fast, one second it's running and the next it's dead.

I had to get towed to the dealer and they looked at the truck. They basically looked at the TPS, CKP and some other stuff. They went through about two hours of tests before determining that the Injection pump had in fact, gone to heaven.

They were real nice at the dealer and told me that it could take up to a week because they don't stock the VP-44 pumps, and Dodge requires them to pretty much jump through hoops to obtain one. But, one is on the way and should be installed sometime next week. It's being covered under warranty and so is the tow bill.

Oh well, I wasn't mad or anything because I was expecting this. I was just surprised at how fast it went when it finally dumped on me. I don't know what the deal is with all the fueling problems people are having lately, but I have become another victim.

Well, it's lucky you'd been waffling about piercing a wire.

As I remember, you don't have a permanent FP gauge installed? Just an occasional check with the Briar Hopper, right?

And they're not stocking a VP44? Lovely.

Has anyone ever seen any stats on the actual failure rate vs vehicles in use? I know we see a higher percentage on sites that deal with CTD's so that isn't a good percentage to look at. Probably won't be a viable answer. A fact that DC might not be made general knowledge.

Does your warranty cover a rental vehicle?

~Dave

A buddies truck, same year of make just died about a month ago.. Both his VP-44 and the lift pump were done.. My theory is the lift pump dies and the VP cavitates itself to pieces. THoughts???

Man whats with this anyway???

Sorry about your luck Jack. :-[

J-eh
Re:It finally happened - Injection pump horror!!
ahh, it's ok. I knew it was going to happen. The lift pump is working fine though, that's what is weird. Every time I measure, I get good pressures. I might replace it anyway just to be safe. I'm also going to get a pusher. Can't wait to get it all done!

I didn't realize what it was until you just said something about it.

Despite Phox's experience, haven't I read somewhere that the VP44 has undergone some improvements in '01-02? Different bearings on the rotor; that sort of thing?

If so, would a pump ordered for a '99 be "improved"?

GP

Did I say that? :-X
