Faulty Thermostat?
Faulty Thermostat?
Since winter has finally rolled around in Texas, I've been monitoring my temp gauge a little more closely so I can tell when the truck is warm enough to romp on and to use the heater. Well, I've noticed that my truck likes to get above 190 a lot now for some reason. Not much past. Maybe a needles width or two, but it keeps doing that. It's mainly crusing low RPM's or sitting in traffic. In the summer time, I could barely get it to hit 190 with AC on and sitting in traffic. What's the deal? If I end up haveing to replace it, I'm going with a 180 thermostat.

BigBlue,

I think your thermostat is working fine... just not opening all the way now that it's colder. Mine will do the same and then if you pull a hill or lean into the engine for a little bit, you'll see it open up more and the temp come down.

Mine will usually ride on the cool side of 190.

When it comes time to change I would like to drop in the 180 thermostat.... only down side to that is Dodge is always looking for a way out of the warranty and I'm sure they would say that's altering the emission system.... maybe after 100K.

Dan

Mine does the same thing now that I reinstalled my 190* stat

I run the 180* during the hot South Texas Summer and I run the 190* in the winter to keep my idle temp high while sitting on locations waiting to get unlaoded.

The rubber o-ring gasket is good for only 1 tighting. Tried to reuse my 190 from last year and it would not work. Kept leaking.
Re:Faulty Thermostat?
Yep, mine is doing it too now that it's gotten cold (6[sup]o[/sup] at the moment
). But it only does it for the first few thermostat cycles, or about 10 miles on the interstate, then settles down. I think what's happening is there's a cold plug of water on one side of the thermostat and it must be delaying the opening slightly, enough for the water temp to rise to about 195. When it does open though, man, the temperature comes down quick!
