fast idle for 2001

I am looking for some help. I am looking for some info on getting a fast idle for my truck. Can it be done with the computor in the truck or do I have to get a fast idle kit from the after market. I need something so I can increase the rpm when I start it to let it warm up. It gets cold here in the great white north. Any info would be a great help. Thanks Garry

Garry, the dealer can reflash your ecm to include the high idle / three cylinder cutout feature. There is a TSB on it, if they are at all competent, they will know what you are talking about. Had it done on mine 3 months after I bought the truck. Works like a charm every time

I got a great adjustable fast idle kit from Harold Bowers, H&E Idle Systems. It's a small electric adjustable stepper type motor that mounts inside the throttle assembly box. A switch is run to the dash to control the motor. You can adjust the fast idle from 850 to 2000 rpm. It will probably go higher but I set mine to 1300 rpm.

I phoned the dealer and they told me that there was nothing they could do to the truck to get the fast idle. they said only the 03 and newer they could do that.

What else would you expect from a dealership....

Find someone with a Smarty downloader, borrow it for 3 minutes and magically you'll have factory high idle and 3 cylinder high idle.... what you won't get is the ability to set the idle speed via the cruise control...

the dealer is lying.... wait, did I say that. I had to hunt down the TSB for another guy, and let him take a copy of it to the local dealer here to get his truck done.
They can do it, no problem at all, they just don't want to be bothered.

TSB 18-019-01

That's all I've got to say about that.

There's a thread in the high performance section right now about a custom built high idler for these trucks. Takes a couple of things from radioshack and a little time to build but from everyone who's installed one it works great. I'm getting ready to install mine.

I faxed a copy of that TSB I got from pind to my local dealer. He phoned me back and changed his mind real quik about the high idle. My truck is booked in on Monday to get it down. All he said is that the truck will sound funny when it is engaged. I can live with the funny sounding truck as long as my truck warms up. Thank you Guys for all the help once again. It was fun to here the dealer try to explain himself after I faxed the copy of that TSB to him. Garry

Why would it sound funny and what is a 3 cylinder cut out? I understand about the high idle, I have it on an International on the cruise that I drive.

Dealer is most likely referring to the 3 cyl idle sounding "odd", not just the high idle.

If it gets cold enough, the ECM shuts off 3 cylinders to help the heat build quicker.
The dead cylinders create a load for the other 3, bringing the heat up.

Keep in mind, this is just the cold weather idle, not the same thing as the late 3rd gens have,
where they can set the idle at any time with the cruise control.

Is the high idle feature only for autos or is it the same for sticks? Majority of posts I've seen is from autos. I could probably get it done for free, or if I can get in front of the scanner I'll do it myself.

I guess I should have asked this first before I built my own high idle box. Oh well, I was bored at work

Dodge claims it's only for autos, but it's been confirmed it works for manuals as well.
