Engine races at startup

Yestereday I get ready to go to work and the truck acted like it was going to stall when I was backing out of my driveway. After work, it would peg the throttle on startup with out my size 17's anywhere near the throttle. But it settled down enough for me to get home. Now it just redlines and I have no clue as to the problem. I did not check for P codes beforre I disconnected the battery cables in hopes that the APPS might be the culprit. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The P1691 code is "Fuel injection pump controller calibration failure". I was told that the pump is probably toast 'cause that code is sympotomatic for the electronics side of the VP44. So I had a wild idea and unhooked the EZ (MAP sensor only, can't find the "top" of the canbus plug) and with more than alittle bit of trpadation, fired the truck up and she idles like nothing is wrong. Wierd is a mild description of the feeling I get. So a call to Edge is in order to see if they want to look inside the chip. Thankyou for the input ! Got some work to do to a RUNNING truck ! Yee ha !

Depending on the age of the EZ they will probably not want to fix it and offer you a new one at a slightly reduced price. Decline that offer and get "SMART".

The Edge is a good eight years old. Seems like a pretty good excuse to get a Smarty. It's wierd though, I was still getting 19-20 mpg untill it had it's meltdown.

1691 has a different meaning on my 02. I can't remember the exact meaning but it had something to do with the Bus signal. I get the codes 1691, 1693 and 1694 every time I turn on my RAD box. Both my edge cts and smarty give me the same meaning for that code And it's nothing about the vp.
First thing I would do is replace the apps with one from TIMBO. And CALL edge.

Called Edge and they say it is too old for them to want to do any investigation on my unit. They're giving me about 40% off on any new Edge product. I'm tempted to get the CTS 'cause I only have a (now non-functioning) fuel pressure gauge and the CTS comes with the "stuff" needed to get the fuel pressure, EGT, etc. where I would have to still buy the gauges and parts to get everything hooked up and working if I bought a Smarty. The Smarty route would cost about twice as much after all is said and done. I gotta do some serious research. Me wee lil truck is a bit of a dog even without the EZ.

Whoops, truck will not start and I'm getting a p0253 and a p1688 code. Looks like I'm gonna need a new VP44.

new edge for 40% off is a deal! I agree a smarty is nice but you will still need gauges, edge rolls it all in one package, the power increase on the fly is nice.
sorry to see your needing a vp, I bought mine from midwest 3-4yrs ago, logged 6000 plus hours on it and still going strong.
