dying vp44?

A buddy of mine has a STOCK 2000 2wd ext cab cummins with a 6spd. he has 2 codes a P1596 and the PO 216 I have looked up both codes on the forum and have read a few other posts

My question is it bad IP? or may there be something else.

when the truck is cold or has been sitting for a few hours you can drive it down the steet and it will have no power at all, like the turbos not spooling but it blows no smoke. but when you turn around and come back it has all the power you want. then sometimes if the rpms drop below 1600 the truck will lug and he has to down shift to get it moving again.

I have worked on 12valves before but no 24valves so any help is appreciated

how much are pumps and wheres the best place to get one.
sorry for the long winded post

I'm not sure about that codes...but it sounds like the VP is dieing. When mine was going out, I would get dead pedal once in awhile, but it wasn't a lot. So I figured my truck was just being itself. Then back in the spring it was sitting there idling like normal for 5-10 minutes, got out on the road for about 100ft and started sputtering, pedal down, rpm's going down...ahh crummy truck has died...would crank over but no fire. Ended up being the VP...which up in Canada cost me around $1800. If you are in the states, I think you can find them as cheap as $1050 for a rebuilt one.

You say it doesn't spool or blow smoke...I would think that says it right there, IMO. The VP is not injecting the fuel into the engine....so there wouldn't be any RPM gain, and since there is no fuel...there is no exhaust/smoke to spool the turbo.

mwfi, great people to work with. Had my pump next day. you have 30 days to return the old one for the core charge so you don't have to up front that. They also pay return shipping for the old pump. One year warrantee. $1045+ shipping
