Re:diferential cover
It will be one of the best investments you can make for the rear axle anyway. I put one on mine before the truck was a year old. If I remember right, the rear end holds near eight quarts now. Plus it looks really cool and several people see the two speed rear end switch I use for the Jacobs cut out and the cover and ask me if I have installed a two speed rear end.
Just make sure the sealing surface on the axle is clean and dry and don't over tighten the new bolts. The new cover uses an o-ring for a seal. Mine has not leaked a drop in over three years. I used the big A with no friction modifier.
Good luck.
Re:diferential cover
Ditto what DD4x4 said. I used a wire brush on the end of drill to clean off all the gasket sealer. Just place a towel over the innards and go to town. Only took a couple minutes and it does a great job and you don't have to worry about marring the sealing surface. Not sure on the 80's but my 70 had a number stamped in the seal area and just a dab of silicone wiped into the stamp (per the maghytec instrtuction sheet) has worked great for 40k now on the rear. Also used the big A with no modifier.
