died suddenly

2001 QC 4x4 - Today as I pulled away from a light it died suddenly and very cleanly, will not restart but does crank enthusiastically. Fuel gauge shows 3/4 full an only has `90 miles on this tank. Completely stock. The Trans (auto) was rebuilt 2weeks ago by and semi local well rated shop.

Any ideas? I dont have a code reader, the tow truck dropped it at a local shop who will likely read it Monday (closed today and tomorrow).

The tow truck guy thought maybe the trans repair may have been afactor and that something simply needs resetting after the trans was out, make any sense?

Thanks guys

If you have driven it for two weeks since trans repair I would doubt it is related. First thing is to get codes and then work off of them. You could get them yourself by cycling the key three times.

You could always do the key trick to see if there are any codes in the odometer window. My guess would be either bad fuel gauge and you may actually be out of fuel; or a bad VP44...

thanks guys, the bad news is that the codes revelaled a bad lift pump and bad injector pump...... I am still not convinced it is worth the cost to repair on top of the tranny rebuild but I cant replace the truck for the combined cost of the engine//trans and I cant get anything out of it when it wont run.....

Now that the tranny is rebuilt, you might as well get these issues taken care of. Hopefully you will have a trouble free truck for some time to come! Just make sure to use an aftermarket lift pump (Airdog, FASS or the likes) rather than the stock setup. Also make sure you have a fuel pressure gauge!

codes cant reveal a bad lift pump, you would need to check fuel pressure to to that, a bad lift pump can ruin a VP, not sure what you were quoted, but do some research as a vp can be easily changed by a fellow with medium mechanical skills, and tools, should be done easily in 4-6hours, I've done it a couple times now and it takes on average about 2-3,

search dieseldan on youtube as there is a video on how to change a vp...

a vp costs about 1000$ and a LP can be from 100-500$ many places will sell you a package deal.
