This is a little tid bit for those of us that own a 99 model CTD.

Did you know that you can also check your ECM codes with your odometer like the 2000 and up models. The procedure is not the same but you can get the trouble codes.

With the key off hold down the trip reset button for a few seconds. Turn the key to the run position while holding down the reset button with out starting the truck and the odometer will read CHEC. You can now release the reset button and if your ECM has any stored codes they will display on the Odometer. The ECM will also run a gauge check after the codes have been displayed.

I've tried this before when I had my 99 to no avail. It would never show the stored codes when going through this procedure. The only way I could get stored codes was with a scanner. I even tried this when I knew for a fact that there were codes stored. Didn't work. I don't know if anyone has actually seen this work, but it's my understanding that the only way you can get codes from a 98.5 and 99 is with a scanner.

hmm, I think the dealer may be wrong because like I said before, the time I tried it, the odo showed no codes even though the scanner showed two, one of which was a speed sensor low voltage or something like that. I dunno.

It means that the sequence is testing all of the lights and numbers on your dash, including all of your gauges. HOWEVER, it will NOT show the codes on that dashboard.

This has been discussed before, and the 98.5 - 99 trucks will not show codes on the dash. The only thing that is, is a test sequence for the dash cluster.
