Decision on Thermostat????

I need to change the thermostat on my 2002 24 V. Should I go with a 180 or 190? I read some old posts that gave about 50/50 opinions. Its been a few years since these posts were made. What is the consensus now? Thanks!

I don't know about which temp you should use but make sure you use the one from cummins.

I would go to the Cummins dealer and buy 190 or warmest one you can buy. With diesels, the warmer the engines run, the more efficient they are.

Other vendors sell cheaper than Cummins. See what the diesel shops can get it for. Definitely go OEM. I've tried the cheap ones 3 times. All were returned under warranty because the temp varied from normal to hot. My radiator was recently cleaned and the water pump works.

Ditto on the Cummins. Don't go cheap if you pull heavy loads. If you never pull a load, then $6 t-stat from NAPA will work fine, otherwise, there is a reason why you pay more for a Cummins.

I was unloaded going down a flat road. $30 GERman Aftermarket tstat had temps all over the range. It was as if it opened consistently but was consistently late. Same results with several different labels on the box.

When I used one from napa my truck would run hotter on the temp gauge while pulling long grades with my fifth wheel in tow. I replaced it with a cummins one and problem went away. If you look at the two side by side you will see how much more flow the cummins one will have. If you don't have huge mountains like we do in colorado or ever tow anything the aftermarket ones would be fine. The cummins one is 32.00 last one I bought.

Yeah, not much for mountain terrain in my part of the country plus i do minimal towing so it works fine for me, but i can see what your saying about your truck running hotter in that type of terrain.

I stayed with the 190 when I changed mine after it stuck. I figured the Cummins guys know best when it comes to this stuff.
