Definitely agree with Kurt.
Another good thing to do is to read the codes that may be set. You can do this by (starting with the truck shut off, and key off) turning the key on, then off, then on, then off, and then on again. So, WITHOUT CRANKING THE ENGINE, turn it on and off again three times, leaving it on that final time. You should see in the odometer display any codes that have been set. It will flash them and then finally display "P done". Typical codes set with a failed/failing APPS are 0121, 0122, 222 and 223. Alternatively you can go to some place like Napa or Autozone and they will usually plug a code reader into your truck and pull the codes for you for free.
Honestly, with the age of your truck you probably need a new APPS anyway if your existing one is stock. I have a 2000 model year 5 speed truck as well and I just installed my 3rd APPS maybe two years ago (1st was stock, and the next two were the same aftermarket model I show a link to below).
Here's a link to a much, much better APPS than what you can get at the Dodge dealer, or Cummins:
https://www.genosgarage.com/product/...gine-sensors-2
Please note that Geno's Garage is only one source for this aftermarket APPS. Many other shops that sell parts for 2nd gen trucks like ours will also offer these.
Good luck, and let us know how it turns out, or if you have any other questions.
Mike
