Coolant level
I drained almost 5gal of coolant and replaced a thermostat and went to fill the raditor back up and put 3 gal of pure anti-freeze and only put 3/4 of a gal of water and it was full. Started the truck back up and let run and topped the raditor off with just alittle more water. But only got about 3/4 gal of water in there.

Why in the sam hill didn't it take more water?
Re:Coolant level
Probably an air pocket in the block or heater core.
Turn the heat all the way to hot, and get the engine warm enough to open the thermostat. Recheck the level.
Carry the bottle with you and recheck after a day or so.

Re:Coolant level
I assume you put the t-stat in with the jiggle pin or orifice in the right position. I think they still have them anyway. Be careful running that thing till you make sure the coolant system is completely full.
Re:Coolant level
Let her run at operating temp for at least 10-15 mins, then bring water with you and leave your cap "loose" and go for a drive on a bumpy road. You deffinatly have a air lock in there.

Re:Coolant level
Checked the truck this morning and was able to get about 1/2 in there, just got back in from a 112 mile haul from Ohio and the temp never even got to the 190 mark, it stayed under that mark. I am going to check the level after the truck cools down.
Re:Coolant level
Just fill up the reservoir when the engine is at operating temps. If your radiator cap is ok it will suck the water in when cooling down.

Just 2c

AlpineRAM
