Cold engine driveability issue

I usually let the truck warm up for a few minutes (10) before I drive it away, I say usually but there have been occasions where I'm late to work and don't let it warm up but am real gentle til I see the temp gauge move up off the 140° mark. Recently on a trip I started and drove it so as not to irritate the other people in the campground, well I noticed it has no power until it gets over say 120° (Before the temp gauge moved). once it warmed up it ran great all day on the way home from camping. Now I don't let it warm up on purpose to see if the Edge gauges will tell me anything, I checked codes and am getting a 0216 (Fuel timing), and 0237 (MAP sensor voltage too low). I assumed this is from the edge. No check engine light.

What I'm gettin is it revs slowly and falls flat, (aboiut 1500 RPM Max.) Fuel pressure not below 12, boost not above 5, EGT around 550°. it will downshift trying to gain more rpm with no luck. Isit a few minutes to let it warm up a bit and it runs completely normal. I'm thinkin its a temp related issue, I've changed the coolant temp sensor and the IAT sensor, I also put a 180° t-stat in it while I was at it. still have the problem.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Hmm. I've never had a problem with the enginge cold and no power. She's always been good to me. However my buddies 92 always takes a little more pedal to get her to move when cold.

P0216 is the code for the dreaded VP44 failure. Mine did the same thing before I replaced it. You are living on borrowed time before you get left on the side of the road.

I've heard that from multiple sources, thanks I think

Yet this morning was the coldest morning all week and it drove great.

mines been doing that for some time now (5K miles plus). I've never tried warming it up, but wether its hot or cold out, I need to drive it this way for a mile or so, than suddenly, without fail, it starts running 100%. I have ahard time thinking its the injection pump, seems like a computer temp sensor issue, but all that I hear and read is that its an injection pump failure.

Are you showing any codes?

Mine does the same thing every day. Just like throwing a switch. For about a mile it is terrible, then it jumps straight to perfect. No 'smoothing out' or gradually getting better or any transition at all. Just one mile of holding up traffic and then bang, runs perfect.

I'll report back tomorrow. Mine has been doing that for the last year or so but I was blaming the transmission for not warming up. New trans and it was still the same. Along came the p0216 and I'll have it back tomorrow with a new VP. If it's powerful cold I'll bet the VP.

I'll let you know.

Mine did the same thing. It would never do it consistently. If the outside temp was below 80 degrees it would run better. Believe me if you have a p0216 you are living on borrowed time. The code is related to an electronic failure. The newer rebuilt pumps (thats all there is) should have this problem addressed.

Ask 2500RAM to verify, but it looks like your truck should still be covered under warranty. You may have to fight for it tho. In the Cummins diesel engine manual that came with your truck is states. The Cummins diesel engine is warranted for a period of 5 years and 100k which goes into effect after the Dodge basic 3/36. Read the book it is in there. Maybe not with your Mods tho, but I got mine replaced even with use of Bully Dog box on work order. Your results may vary.

Yes, it's in there. Page 12, section 2.6 paragraph A and B. 6 hours on the phone with Chrysler and Dodge my VP is being replaced under warranty for $200. The breaking point was when I mentioned they changed the wording in 06 or 07 but 99-06 it was the same.

Good luck.

Well I've got the new VP and the truck starts MUCH better but it still drives the same. Low power for the first few miles and then it comes on like you lit a fire. I'm still holding onto the trans not being up to temp but not sure. Just a side note on the VP, I now have a haze of smoke when stock, before nothing. I haven't yet hooked up the EZ but I'm sure that will happen tonight.

Good luck.
