Check engine light on

Hello
I have owned a ton of 12 valves but this is only my second 24 valve. recently my check engine light has been coming on I thought when it gets around 1/4 tank but yest on a trip it came on around 1/2 tank and hasnt switched off yet. it does seen to run slightly sluggish or maybe slight miss @ idle dont see it on the tach fluctuating or jumping. seems to run fine. dont know if its related but the temp hasnt gotten to 190* at all since getting cold sits around bottom temp but I havnt been driving hwy too much tho. its a 99 2500 4x4 5 speed with 217,xxx miles not aware of any mods except power puck installed by previous owner and a pac brake that is supposed to be disconnected previous owner said it came on and he just disconnected it. would an old fuel filter bring that light on? its been cold here pretty much under 20* for last couple weeks please give me all advice and ideas you have thank you

I'm thinking first thing you should do is get your codes pulled so that you can see what is triggering the CEL light. I kind of doubt that the CEL is based on the level of fuel in the tank although I could be wrong on that. I am brand new to diesel motors so my personal knowledge base is all based on wrenching on gas jobs.

I know that my diesel motor is a cold blooded beast that takes a loooong time to come up to temp and never really gets up to it's normal operating spring and summer running temps. I don't have a proper engine temp guage, just the crappy OEM one in the instrument cluster.

Check your codes and post back. Others will chime in with the how to fix it details.

Cheers!

Mike

Johnh: Are you bored? Or are you trying to up your post count? I have a legitimate question and you are worried about my punctuation? I have not been able to find any codes and I would like to figure out whats wrong. I am NOT asking questions or posting my report for my 8th grade teacher. Sorry if this bothers you but I'm sure DTR will be just fine without grammer police.

NOW can anybody help me out with what I can do? I have tried several times to get codes. Ive tried turning on-off-on-off-on and nothing but milage shows. Ive tried turning on waiting for cycle turn off turn back on wait to cycle turn off again and turn back on and NOTHING. And I have tried all the variations in between....

PLEASE CHIME IN WITH RELEVANT INFO

The key trick won't work for that year. Go to autozone to get codes read or a friend with a smarty. Dead tach should be crank sensor, remove the starter to get to it. Get code(s) to be sure.

Relevant info, You will need a scanner of some sort to read the codes. There is no sense in guessing what it might be until you have that information.

Well, to stab in the dark is or can be rather tiresome....with that said and it seems your gonna, I wuld suggest getting the codes pulled up it will give you us a foundation to go from...

But based upon the information I see, I would start with a few questions for you..

I see you live in Mil. Wis. that is the coldest city in the Union, so when is the last time you filled up...could your fuel be gelling??/

Is this a daily driver??? If not could you have let it sit long enough to build up condinsation in the tank??? If so and your low enough on fuel could you be sucking water??? If your sucking water what does the tailpipe look like at idle???

Get codes read and tell us them 1st...

Depending on those...

Open the valve on the fuel filter housing and drain it, close it and prime the system, start the truck and run it....do this first to rule out bad fuel/water.

If rough get to a station fill up with fresh fuel...and add an anti gelling agent...and repeat.

If rough check filter....

About the temp...well that could be a stuck thermo....if its stuck open well thats better than stuck closed...but if you arnt driving it long enough to heat up add in the very cold weather and that could be as simple as not letting it get to full operating temp.

Lastly....you dont say that you have a complement of guages....I would like to know what fuel PSI your getting....

I have seen this comment on several of my technical forums and it always makes me wonder. " Maybe your fuel is getting low enough to suck water from the bottom of the tank".

If you have water in the tank then once it reaches a certain level it will be sucked up regardless of fuel level. The fuel pickup is in a fixed position so it makes no difference at all what the fuel level is. Full or empty the pick up is in the same place so it will only pick up garbage if the garbage is high enough to reach it. Also, most pickups are NOT right on the bottom of the tank because there is ALWAYS a small amount of junk in any tank. Water in diesel is pretty much a given. That is why you have a water separator and a means to drain it easily.
