Changing Differential Fluid

Okay, I'm going to be changing all the fluids on the truck soon including front and rear diffs. Do the 02s require sealant or do they use a gasket? My dad said his 95 doesn't use a gasket but he wasn't sure about my truck.

Any insight/hints as how to make this process go smoother, not nessecarily faster... I just want it done right as this will be my first time. What weight/brand are you guys using? Also my dad mention something about a LSD additive??

Any help would be appreciated!

When I changed out my diff oil, I sucked it out with a pump.

When I change my diff oil I suck as much of it as possible out through the plug hole, then I remove the cover to get the rest out and to inspect the ring & pinion and all that good stuff. When I first did mine, I bought a gasket for it b/c Advanced said they had one and I figured it would be easier than RTV. However, this lasted about 12 hours until I noticed a leak out the bottom area of the cover seal. So I said F the gasket and went and bought some black rtv. Just follow the instructions on it and you'll be fine. Mine's been on there for awhile now and no leaks at all. As far as slip additive goes, I'm not sure, I use Amsoil synthetic in mine, so it's good to go.

Yeah I heard if you run amsoil you can run it 100% and be fine. Might consider it... what weight?

Just did mine with Mobil 1 syn, it was a 75w 90 oil I read on here. I bought 2 packs of the lsd conditioner per the instructions on the packs for the fluid necessary. 3 qts oil with the 2 packs/tubes of lsd fluid was perfect but it says 7 pints so I bought 4 qts and have a spare for later.

Also while there check your vent tube, take it apart and blow or clean it out. I'm told they plug easily and then pressure builds and you loose axle seals. Yes I lost the drivers axle seal but the vent was fine, just my time I guess.

I used some RTV don't remember the color but I drained the fluid, cleaned both surfaces well, put on a good bead around the entire area and torqued the pan and bolts down. I left it overnight before filling, overkill I'm sure but the directions said it cured in 24 hours and I wasn't in a hurry to get under the rear again.

No leaks.

Questions feel free to PM.

Original has RTV sealant. I swapped out my fluid with 75w 90 Synthetic Amsoil longer lasting & better lube. I also got a MagHytek so its easier to drain, has a dipstick, no sealant has a O-ring & holds more fluid.

I used gray RTV, no gasket. So far its still dry on the outside.

If you use fluid w/ friction modifier drive the truck first before you add any. If you add too much...no lsd. I went with Royal Purple 75W90 with friction mod in it and it works fine.

I used RTV with no leaks but I do have a problem. Right after I changed the fluid I started throwing lube on the wheel. I filled to the drain hole and have since read that some folks stop filling 3/4 inche below the drain. Did I fill too much? Not trying to high jack the thread but this may be a important fact to know or it might just have happened for another reason.

I put Royal Purple 75W90 in mine and it did the clunk-clunk-clunk thing on turns in the morning when cold. So, I poured in a little bottle of friction modifier and it does fine now.

I asked this when I replaced my failed axle seal. You need to look in your owners manual how full to fill, to the filler hole or below. Dodge or whoever moved the fill hole on the D70 around 01-02 I was told and your owners manual has the correct info for your truck, no manual, a call to the dealer with your vin should help. If it's a bad seal it's not so bad I think it was ~15 or so each at NAPA. Since you just changed the fluid you can reuse it as long as you don't get dirt in it when you drain.

Interesting, so if you use too much modifier bu-buy LSD? I hope the directions on the bottle were correct and the lady (great by the way) at NAPA read correctly.

It wont ruin your lsd if you add to much additive (atleast I don't think it would), but it basically wont work because the additive will allow to much slipage between the frictions and steels.

Be very careful with the LSD and modifier. None is best, unless it grabs too much. This is usually not the case with synthetic. If you tow heavy, get the 85-140, I think. Many of the syn reae lubes will case the LSD to not work, too slick. The Royal Purple seems to be a more recommended solution. Most people have good luck with that and their LSD.
Taking the rear cover off is a pita. suck the old lube out. Quicker, easier.

I dropped the cover on mine and used Red Line synthetic. I didn't have to use friction modifer and it is working fine. There is no gasket on mine. I got a gear sealant (silicon rubber adhesive) from Dodge. It works great.
