Blue air filter element??

I'm new to dodge cummins and just picked up a 99. While going through the engine I noticed the air filter was very dirty, under the paper filter was a blue foam piece about 2 inches thick and seemed to be slightly oiled. Is this a stock piece? I checked out new air filters at the parts store and the blue foam is not included, do I have to run both the paper filter and foam. If not what replacement filters should I run?? Mopar only, or are the STP filters from Autozone fine to use.

thanks in advance.
jerry

Re:Blue air filter element??

The foam is just a pre-filter that is stuck onto the stock air filter. Basically it just keeps the larger particles from getting down into the pleats.

Any new filter should be OK, even if it doesn't have a pre-filter. The prefilter is just added piece of mind.
