BIG problem with DTC's.. need hellp

'01 2500, Edge juice with attitude, ATS co-pilot TC locker, ATS VB and 3 start TC, 4 1/2" jansen exhaust.
This is grandpa's truck. used to pull RV

Just recently, started getting P0341 error codes but truck ran fine, so cleared and waited to see what happens.. same code kept coming back (indicating the camshaft position sensor problem).. ok, so I ordered one. will be here next week.. BUT.. now I've started getting P1689 codes (no communication between ECM and injector pump), AND the danged tach just quits working after the truck runs for a while.

Can all of this be related to the Camshaft position sensor? It would seem to me that the crankshaft position sensor would be the one that controls the tach.

anyone had similar problems?

I don't think the '01's have a crank position sensor (although I could be wrong on that one), so I would think the cam position sensor would be your culprit. It's a PITA to replace though. And do check your wiring to make sure that it is not damaged, as has happened before. Good luck.

2000 was the last yr for ckp, your new cam sensor should clear things up.

If the camshaft speed sensor shows a different engine speed than the speed sensor inside the vp44 you will get that 1689 code. i was having trouble with the same code showing up all the time ended up to be a cam sensor. As for 2000 being the last year of the crank sensor. When i had mine hooked up to the diagnostic tool at the local diesel shop the last time for some other codes the display showed readings from the cam, ip, and crank sensors that would lead me to belive that my 01 does have a crank sensor unless its just a calculated speed on the read out.

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
Your chips and their programming may be interfering. Remove and try. Communication error is generally indicator IP is going down.
The sensor can be accesed with 10 mm 1/4 drive socket and long extension if I recall. Not easy.

your tach and the 1689 dtc are directly related to that cam sensor, just hope that the tone wheel on the back of the cam is not coming loose, i have only seen this once but it is possible for the screws to back out, also the 2001 cummins engine doesnt use a crank sensor(they stopped crank sensors in 99 or 2000)

Thanks so much to everyone for their input. I can rest a bit easier now. However, in looking at the sensor's mounting screw, it looks like an allen wrench type of screw. very hard to tell. If someone has changed theirs, what about removing that hose that's attached to the bottom of the power steering unit, that goes up to the block? That would give me a lot better access to the unit.
