Belt Squeak On Shutdown

My truck has a belt squeak everytime I shut it off. Do I need a new belt or does it just need to be tightned. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks

its a cummins thing, just get used to it. dont think i have ever heard one NOT do it. the motor shuts down so quick because of compression the pulleys cant stop as fast so it squeaks.

A Goodyear Gatorback belt will make the skreetch go away. I've had mine on for a couple years and not one squeek since.

The description of the cause of the chirp was close. What happens is caused by the high compression of these engines. As the engine is slowing to a stop it is still compressing the air in the cylinders. At some point the engine is no longer turning fast enough to push a piston all the way to the top. Rotation stops and the residual pressure in the last cylinder turns the engine backward. This unloads the tensioner and allows the belt to spin backwards on the crankshaft pulley, producing the squeak you hear. It is annoying, but harmless.

Goodyear Gatorback and a few others do not squeak.

I love my Gates belt... Its nice and loud!!!

However I ran a Gatorback, not knowing that it solved the problem and it did. But I change mine once a year no matter the condition its in.. Cheap insurnace IMHO

I put on a MOPAR belt last August and the skreek stopped, but its slowly coming back. Its normal and you can't really tighten it, its on a tensioner.

I might have to try one of them goodyear gatorback belts. I don't like pulling up somewhere and shuttin it off and people wonder what the squeak is.

If you're just worried about what other people wonder about..... I think you worry too much.
