Bad starter?

This hapened to me one day like six months ago and now it has begun to happen as much as once or twice a day. When I go to start the truck, the solenoid engages and I hear the starter attempt to engage but thats it. its just a somewhat violent "clink". I try it a few times and it will eventually turn over. when it turns over it starts fine and theres no problem once its running. The other day it wouldnt quit doing it so I left the truck in 1st got out and did my best to rock the truck back and forth. Though i looked like an idiot in the parking lot it started after that. No codes. I know with a lawn mower and some small outboards the starter gear can jam against the flywheel when it attempts to engage. But my truck aint no lawn mower ha. Any help would be much apreciated. Im pretty sure its the starter but want a second opinion before i pull it off. ya im lazy i know. Thanks, coop

more than likely you need starter contacts, the solenoid will engauge but not pass current to the starter motor. pull the starter out and remove the rear cover(3 screws) and look at contacts one side will be burnt up and paper thin.
heres a link that provides oversized contacts (any starter/alt shop can provide you with stock replacements for about 6$ for the pair.

I replaced the solenoid contacts too, they were worn out. Bout the kit off of E-bay for $29 and it was just fine. Eliminated the problem you described immediately.
