Either get his starter with upgraded contacts or his contacts.

Sounds like you are eating up starter solenoid contacts. I'd start by installing a set of Larry B's heavy duty contacts , you can find them here

http://www.genosgarage.com/prodinfo.asp?number=LB-R90SS

I'd also check battery condition with a load tester (one at a time disconnected from the truck). Clean all battery cable connections, inspect cables for corrosion at end connectors. Weak batterys or poor connections will hammer the contacts even faster. As voltage drops, current increases.

1st , it sounds like your getting cheap [ bad ] parts , where are you getting these starters , are they warrantying them ?
The upgrade mentioned are good to do , but any non upgraded starter should last a lot longer than that , so there is another problem that you haven't mentioned , bad parts or something in the truck .
Most suppliers are going to have rebuilt , but finding a good rebuilt can be an issue , many try to put as little into the starter as possible to make more profit .
Here's a link to parts / info / new .

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
You say starter runs for 10-12 seconds after starting!!! Is the "ign start" position on key switch not returning to "run" position? That would kill a starter after a few cycles. Perhaps a relay is sticking? Is the starter being "cocked" in opening causing gear bind?

Generally Napa has good parts , so it would seem that you have a problem on the truck .
No its not a chev. so no shims .
Find the source of your problem , not make it worse with trying re engineer with shims .
I would get the replacement form Napa , then put in the larger contacts form Larry B's , then go looking for the problem in the truck .
You may find that the rebuilt from Napa has the large contacts , builders know about this & some put them in .

Burned contacts will either hang in after start or click with no start.

Weak battery, corroded conections, weak battery cable, poor ground.
