Bad speed sensor & diff. oil question

1999 2500 diesel with 64000,
I took a long road trip 1600 miles last weekend, 800 pulling a boat. my Brake,& ABS light came on with my speed-o. stopped working. So I replaced the speed sensor on top of the diff. and it fixed the problem.

By not ever changing the Diff. alxe oil cause me so much trouble?
Heat to the sensor? leaking axle seal, which was replaced 4000miles ago with a brake job. And now I see the pinion axle seal leaking.
I guess I'll be changing the diff. oil now. and keep an eye on the seal.
any GL-5 and a friction additive @ 6.5% of lube will work?
how much do I buy?
