Auto trans problem
Auto trans problem
This weekend i noticed that my trans started acting wierd. I was going about 45 up a medium grade, not realy accelerating just steady. The trans was acting like it was searching for a gear, I turned the overdrive off and if didnt do it any more. Turned it on an it was back! It didnt realy feel like it was slipping or shifting in and out of overdrive. Could the torque converter have been unlocking and locking? By the way its a 99 4x4 auto. Thanks
Yes, Mr. Lonestar, your TC is probably locking and unlocking. It's caused by electrical noise in the wiring from your ECM. The good news is the fix is relatively easy. When mine started this, I ordered a noise filter from DTT (about $37.00), installed it myself, and no more problems. You can give them a call (see the Links section, under transmission.) and they will send one to you with instructions.
I did recalibrate my APPS, but that was just a temporary fix, 5 days to a week at most. You might want to try this first. You can find the procedure in the Tech Facts section, under 2nd Gen.

Lonestar,
DPG is right. Electrical noise is most likely the culprit.
I found that keeping the electrical connections clean, especially the batteries (they are the biggest noise filter in the RAM system) was the best way to take care of this.
Best of all it's free!
