Alternative Fuel?
Alternative Fuel?
I was wondering if anyone has tried to run the used cooking oil as an alternative fuel?? I found this link and would like to try it but I am a little aprehensive. Any Response would be great. The web site is dieselsecrets.com. Thanks Luke
Luke, if you want alternatives, use Biodiesel, not that jazzed up veggie oil that diesel secrets pawns.
Check out the alternative fuels forum as a sub forum of the other diesel topics forum on DTR.

Ok I just thought it might be too good to be true. I am sick of these theives that price this fuel. Just yesterday it came on t v about crude oil raising. And today at the pumps. it jumped 20 cents a gallon!!! Its ********. Diesel should be much less than gas. Why cant we as people do something about it! Thanks for the reply on the veggie oil.
Eot,
I've been looking at Home made Bio-diesel off and on for several years now.
I suspected that the Iraq/Iran/Korea problems would go global and fuel would have to be purchased with "A" cards like in WW2 and a thriving blackmarket would arise.
Such is My opinion of Our so-called leaders and the level of their incompetence
or greed.
My advice is to learn all you can first, then take the plunge and buy a automated manufacturer/pump system.
It'll pay for itself eventually and with consistent fuel quality You won't potentially screw up an expensive ride.
Try this place:

Another great resource for alternative energy is PES-Wiki,just google it.
There are many, many Larry Lightbulb schemes there but worth a close look.
Of particular interest to me is the prospect of vast algae farms producing
bio-diesel and also Brown gas or Boom gas generators in use today for diesel passenger trucks and tractor-trailers,
and they have many links to manufacturers and hobby sites.
Good reading and Good Luck!

I looked into that stuff last year. Did some googling around and here's what I found out:
If you go for DieselSecrets, they will tell you to use X gallons of WVO, X gallons of Kerosene, X gallons of GASOLINE, and a bottle of their additive. That is your mixture. (Don't remember how many parts of each) I think what it does is thin out the veggie oil so it will run in your engine without having to be heated. Not sure what their additive does since I have read of others running the WVO/Kero/gas mixture without the additive and getting about the same results.

WEll i appreciate all the replys. It would be nice to find a cheap alternative fuel. I read some of the post on the diesel secrets page but dont know whether to belive them. I would be scared of mixing gas and kero and oil to get fuel. I would be afraid of cooking my engine. It s bad enough paying for a new main pump. Which i did a year ago. and lost the new lift pump 6 months ago. I love my cummins but, why does it cost so much to run.

bio, and WVO
Its a lot of work to make your own bio-diesel. And unless you make your own prossesor its expensive to start up. i made my own for $350. and can make 80 gal. a batch. But if you have the time, and the means, do it. once your up and running its not hard to make. do to a bad back, i havnt collected oil in about 9 months. but i just had surgery, so i am going to start collecting next week. a good thing about living in a warm climant, i was just running 80% ioll, 20% diesel blend instead of making actual bio diesel. i ran this set up in my 1st gen for almost a year. it was less than .70 sent a gallon. and less time to make than bio. But this wont work in a colder climant. she will gel on ya, then ur in trouble. I know a farmer that uses sunfloer seed oil, cut with 10% unleaded gas, and runs this in all his tractors, and trucks all year around for 4 years now with no troubles. either way, its better than $3.50 at the pump.

Bob you say you were running oil mixed with diesel. I am in warm climate as well. What were you doing to the oil before adding to your tank? You said 80 20 mix. I know the cost of diesel is outragous here in florida. Thanks
i think the best solution is to leave the truck in the garage. since the price of fuel went over 3.00 i have stopped my salvage business... i wasn't making enough profit to continue. besides i don't think the oil company's need my monetary input
This thread will probably get moved to fuels section.. Theres a bunch of old posts in there with good info. Summary is that you can react cooking oil with some chemicals in a homebrew reactor like an 'appleseed' and drain off the heavy fractions, wash it with water mist and dry/filter it to get biodiesel. OR you can take cooking oil and filter / de-water it and convert your truck to run it. The conversion needs an auxillary fuel system with its own tank, heated lines, heated filter and heat exchanger near the pump. You use solenoid fuel switches to change feed and return, starting and shutting down on diesel.
The injection system is designed with the viscosity of diesel in mind. If you put anything thick like veggie oil in there, the fuel is not atomized correctly and it can coke the rings and contaminate the oil. Be very careful, it has to be 160F or more at injection.
Theres a few methods of dealing with each problem along the way of making fuel from the stuff. You just need to read a pile of info and figure out what suits you best.
Id be really careful of any system that claims you can mix up something and run it without a conversion.

My brother works for a large commercial truck fleet maintance company, he keeps all the used motor oil and runs it through a filter then cuts it 50% with diesel. He has a 96 cummins and has doing that for 3 years now.
I have run between 2,000 and 3,000 gallons of biodiesel B100 thru my '01 and the only thing that has gone wrong is the fuel line Vulcan supplied with the LP relocation kit was eaten. They have since started to supply bd resistant line. The only fuel I have purchased in the last few years is for my wifes gasser. I have to take a heart pill for that.
Two things to keep in mind if you want to start making bd, one is make sure you have a good supply of good oil because the stuff is getting hard to get and two, it takes a LOT of your time so if you have a busy life, forget it.

eot,
I run the wvo through a hot water heater, and though some filters, and a water seperator. then add the 20% of #2 to my cone tank, and mix it for about 30 min. running it all throught a 5 micron. I just bought a new colection pump, and will be starting up agian here this weekend. got an 900 mile trip on the 15th march. and then a 6400 mile trip. All will be powerd by b100. of course the 6400 mile trip mean 350 gal in the back of the truck.
kawi600,
if you are running straight wvo then yes you need to heat, or you will get coaking. but in a warm climate like where i am, cutting clean oil with diesel loweres the voc. When i changed my head gasket last spring on the 1st get ever thing was perfect for 300k. now cylinder wall damage, all the cross thatching was there, and the valves where awsome. No this popbably would have not been the case if i was trying to run just un heated straight wvo.
