ABS and brake light bugs
My ABS and brake light have been coming on at times lately. mostly at highway speeds (55MPH+) I just replaced the front wheel bearings assemblys which had new ABS sensors on them.. SO I figured that the rear VSS on the differential was the culprit. I replaced that and my lights still come on at times... Now where should I look??
Connectors and brake fluid level are the easiest things to check. Next would be to get it scanned and see exactly what code is setting. When the lights come on, stop in most major auto parts chains and they can usually check the codes for you. Leave the truck running though, because the codes get reset at each ignition cycle. They can hook their scanner up with the key on and have no troubles reading the code that way. I had an issue with a 2nd gen truck once that just a little dielectric grease on the ABS module connector cleared it up too........water seems to be able to get in there and cause issues.
I'm not sure that the chain stores can pull codes on the ABS system as the scanners are proprietary . The next thing I would replace is the stoplight switch, around $13.00 at Autozone.
The ABS is not proprietary. Actually Dodge doesn't have a thing to do with it. It is designed by either Bendix or Kelsey Hayes depending on application. Any who......you could be correct on the brake light switch, but why waste money throwing parts at it? Worst case scenario is you have to pay a brake shop or other repair shop to hook up and TELL you for sure what is turning the light on. Should be a minimal fee, and no wasted money.
We've gone through this many times before. You can't get the codes for the ABS read except for at the dealer, call it what you will. The scan fee will be much more than a stoplight switch, which has been shown to solve this type of problem in the past.
If you and I have gone thru this before, then maybe you should re-read some of my previous posts. I'm sorry if you are a "non believer", but I can get codes out of virtually ANY ABS system with my Snap On scanner, my Matco Determinator scanner, and I have personally used numerous other scanners with much success. Bring me your Dodge truck, and I can SHOW you on 3 separate scanners on any given date that I can get the codes and sensor information. Just FYI, I happen to be A.S.E. Master Certified and Chrysler Silver certified. I also hold an Associates Degree in Automotive Service Technology and been in the field for over 15 years now. What do you have to back up your info?

Okay my lights have been on since I did my front brakes and I tried to read it with my ProScan reader and it wont. Which ones will read it I rally do not want to pay the dlr for a read.
Thanks.
Thanks.
You're probably going to have to pay the dealer to scan it for you. The chain stores can't scan them nor can the scanner you have. You don't have to take my word for it call them to see if they can get codes. The scanners that work are already loaded with the software and are usally provided for at the dealer. There are other posts on this same subject and the conclusion is the same. The scanners that you and I and the chain stores can have do not scan the ABS system on our trucks.
fsciola.......you very well could be right about the chain stores generic scanners. HOWEVER.......most professional grade scanners that I have used are able to read the ABS codes........take it for what it is worth lovinctd59.........you do not have to go to the dealer. Most brake shops have the ability. Pay them instead of the dealer to find out the code. Ask them first if they are able, and if they are not, call another. Again......the dealership is not the only place that has the capability of reading ABS codes. Period.
Scanner works
Not to fuel the fire but I wanted to clarify this problem because I have seen alot of threads started with a problem presented then thread just ends with no response from the poster with the fix they discovered for the original problem. I had the ABS and Brake light go on in my truck. I topped off the brake fluid and power steering reservoirs and that didn't make the lights go off. My neighbor has a small one bay shop in his back yard. I drove my truck next door and he plugged in a Snap-On brand Scanner, put my VIN information in and switched the Scanner to the ABS code reading option. Within two minutes he told me that the RWAL sensor was open. $39 part and...............lights out. Hope this provides some clarity for those needing a answer to the original question.
