99' Dodge 2500 transmission problems?

I am hearing from a bunch of people on another forum that the transmissions in the 99 2500 cummins are notorious for crapping out at 100k miles. Is this true? I would like some insight and hear what kinda mileage yall have on yalls 99 auto trannys.

1999 auto trans

mine went at around 97k miles, took it to the dealer several times while still under waranty and they ignored it , so at 100 k dont be suprised to have to shell out around 3 grand to rebuild- tranny is a piece of junk-bad design

Is there anyway I could beef it up or is it even worth doing? Is there a bolt in swap to get rid of this crappy tranny? What usually goes out with the tranny? Is it the clutches? seals? If Ive rebuilt a 4T60-E before, how hard is this tranny to rebuild? Any special tools?

My personal experience... both 1500 gasser and 2500 CTD had trans rebuilds. Both are '99 MY. Had both rebuilt by transmission shop so I can not tell you specifics on each. Gasser was pretty close to 100k and 2500 was about 120 to 130k on the clock. I beleive both were mostly clutches but not sure.

Read past posts and you will see a lot about upgrading the VB and TC. There is a wealth of information in previous posts.

there are plenty of aftermarket parts for these trans. available at present from torqe converters and billet input shafts and torqe converters and better clutches- look around and research this site- there is plenty of info for you here and good people to steer you in the right direction.

Ive done a few searches but this forum is hard to narrow searches down with just a 24V Engine and Drivetrain sub forum. I would just figure a forum with so many users would be easier to navigate.

Yea I just got done replacing my tc,valve body and front drum seals. It was about a 3 day job. The clutches I looked at were in good shape. The tc has been shuddering since I put on the edge ez. I went with the goerends tc/vb. I drove it to work tonight and it is a differnt truck.Dave at goerends was top notch to work with.

Good choice. I rebuilt my spare 47re with Daves parts/tips for my 01. Works like champ. I've also had two of my good customers with engine mods order tranny's from him that I installed. They can't thank me enough for the recommendation.

I Have a '99 with the crappy auto. Mine did last longer than most, I got about 170K and have since replace it with two others that lasted about 4k each. Whatever you do, do not tow in OD, even if your running on flat ground....

I tow in my 99 using OD and have 160K on the odometer. I did have trouble at 20K and had a BD TC, BD valve body and tranny pressure booster installed and haven't had a problem since. I agree the stock tranny is junk however it can be beefed up nicely to handle most power levels. I had the banks stinger plus installed until recently. Too many CELs indicating low maf voltage caused by the banks stuff and now running stock power. Tranny still working great.

I have close to 133K on original tranny. I installed a drain plug. Whenever the fluid gets to 250* I drain out 5 quarts or so and refill with ATF+4. It still shifts perfectly and I tow in overdrive. When I get to the hills I drop it out of overdrive. We shall see how long it goes. I will be installing a gorend tranny when this one goes bad.

I tow EVERYWHERE in OD, even when I leave town and it's 125 degree+. There is no way I'm going to putt around the western US out of OD.

I wont be doing much towing except for towing my Jeep every once and a while. Is Bully Dog Rapid Power Auto Trans Fluid good stuff to put in your autotranny. I want the tranny to last as long as it will. What other tranny fluid is good to use?
