6 speed tranny

Need info please. My 02 Dodge tranny gives me fits when shifting from 4th to 5th gear. 5th to 6th is smooth. Can't find the gear when in a really big hurry to get on the highway. Took the truck to dealership (4 days) and they replaced bent shifter fork (Imagine that if your about to be rear-ended) and other goodies Dodge's service bullitin recommended which would fix the problem. That was at 33K miles. Now with 51K miles the problem is still there. I have tolerated the shifting problem but it sure is annoying. Is there a fix for this?

Try changing your fluid to Redline MTL. I am about to do this in my truck, and hear nothing but good things about the switch. They say it shifts smoother and feels much better than the stock fluid. Also, you might want to try double clutching from 4th to 5th. That should take away the problem, temporarly.

the first week i owned my truck (i bought it july of 2003) i could hit fifth gear no problem. after that, i couldnt do to save my life...i ended up going from 4th to 6th just so i wouldnt have to deal with the frustration. after a month of practice i could hit it again without a problem. but i do notice now that if i am in a hurry, fifth will be stubborn. redline mtl is a good idea, i have it and like it.

good luck, Pat

Thanks for info. Will try Redline just as soon as I can find local dealer.

I'm running Redline MTL in mine, but I still have a grind from 4th to 5th if I'm in a hurry. I used to be able to hit that no problem, but now I've got to pause before sliding into 5th otherwise I'll get a grind.

Also noticed that I can feel a little gear clash when downshifting back into 2nd when rolling up to a stop. Not always, but it's there.

Redline MTL is mandatory with the 6 speed.
Buy it online @ www.synlubes.com they stock it.

www.myoilshop.com also has MTL.

I used to order from synlubes, but their QC wasn't so good. They sent me the wrong stuff.

MTL is great in the 5600. If you still get a little grind, mix in up to 50% Redline MT-90 (which is thicker than MTL).

I've had MTL in for 20K miles and it's been great. Almost all my driving is around town, so if I had shifting issues, you'd know it

The NV5600 needs 9.5 pints or 5 quarts to fill'er up.

I have the same problem but it is with 3rd gear instead of 5th and only happens when it is cold outside. I double clutch when going into 3rd and it seems to be working that way. When I do double clutch very few times will it grind but when the tranny warms up i have no problems at all. I think that its the tranny fluid so I am going to change it and put in Redline. Does anybody know where (besides the dealership) I can get the tool to remove the fill plug?

I made one with a bolt and welded a nut on. Double nut would work too. 17mm hex.

Yep, a 17mm hex head is a 10mm bolt....a lot cheaper than a 17mm hex wrench! I just put Royal Purple SynchroMax in mine Saturday night. Drain it with the bottom bolt on the driver side PTO cover. Once drained I removed the entire cover, took the little refrigerator magnet out that sits in the bottom of the case and cleaned it off. There wasn't as much junk in there as I expected....maybe an 1/8" coating on the magnet....nothing in the case bottom. I was able to fit just a bit over 4 qts back in, so I'll re-check the level this weekend. Now with about 150 miles since the change, I must say it is noticeably smoother....and the 5th gear pain seems to be fading
Next, MaxGear is going in the D80.

If I'm in a big hurry I just wind 4th out and skip to 6th.
