I was wonderin from factory if the just use regular 80/90 wt gear oil in the tranny? And also what size is that allen wrench that fits the plug where you fill at? And while i'm at it what about the transer case? I'm changin fluids and wonderin where to drain and what to put back in? thanks
When I changed my transmission oil, the dodge dealership told me to put in Mopar ATF +4. As far as the transfer case goes, Im not sure I havent changed that. I didnt use an allen wrench for the plug on the transmission, I found a bolt head big enough to fit in the plug, cant remember what size, and welded a nut on the end of the bolt and just used a wrench to take the plug out, it worked pretty good.
No, No, No
You need manual transmission (synchromesh) fluid. The Chrysler specification is MS-9224
GL4/5 gear oil has too much high pressure/shear lubricants. It's much too sticky
ATF won't protect the yellow metals of the synchonizers

The hex plug is 17mm. You drain it thru the PTO cover bolts. Pull the bottom one on either side. DON"T USE ATF IN THE NV5600! I am currently running 6 quarts of the Redline MTL and noticed smoother shifting when warmed up. That's key because it has been a cold winter and the 6 spd. is hard to synch up when its cold I have learned! I filled mine thru the top cover because the Hex fill hole is too low to get a full 6 qts into. If you pump it and its cold outside I suggest heating the trans lube in a 5 gallon bucket of hot water so it flows better.

Transfer case doesn't need +4. That is a friction modifier for the clutches. No clutches in your transfer case. Just use Dextron/Mercon.
Yep, drain plug is a 17 mm hex. Sears has it for around $10 or so, if I remember correctly. I'm running Redline in mine, a 50/50 mix of MTL and MT90. That's what Redline recommended.
I switched my NV5600 to Redline MTL a little while back. It shifts better than with the factory stuff and seems to warm up quicker.
I'm not sure overfilling is a good idea, though. There will certainly be more parasitic drag on the rotating assemblies in the trans. Perhaps the additional fluid capacity (essentially lower lubricant temps) will overcome the hp loss with the overfill, but I don't know...
Mine has four quarts in it and it seems to be fine, but I don't have a temp gauge on the trans.

You can use any desired ATF 1,2,3,4 in any of the transfer cases.
Ever wonder what Ford uses in their transfer cases? Hint: it certainly isnt a Chrysler ATF fluid even though the same company makes them for both companies (new process gear).
The NV5600 does however require a special lubricant.
I use the Redline MTL synthetic with good luck. However if you want to find something local, Autozone carries Pennzoil "Syncromesh" it comes in a yellow gear lube type bottle and it is spec'd for NV5600 trannies.

You take the shift boot off and remove the cup holder tray. If its 4x4 just pop the shifter lever boot off the 4X4 lever and turn it sideways. pull the four bolts holding the shifter base to the top of the trans housing being careful not to drop anything into the trans. Wipe around it before doing this because its usually dirty and make sure the plastic cup on the bottom of the shifter ball stays put and doesn't fall into the tranny! Fill w/ fluid and replace in reverse order. Don't over tighten the four bolts holding the shifter ro in place. I don't know the torque specs for these but I snugged em and haven't had a problem.
