47RE tranny question

Here is how my tranny shifts. Help on these issues would be appreciated.

Shifts great between 1st and 2nd when light to medium throttle is used. The harder the throttle, the longer it takes to shift of of 1st and into 2nd. At WOT it overrevs before it will shift to 2nd.

For some reason between 2nd and 3rd there is a spot where the rpm's make a jump before it shifts into 3rd. This only happens under light throttle. It doesn't have this glitch between 2nd and 3rd when more throttle is used.

Also, overdrive kicks in way too soon. At about 40 mph. Boggs way down. When I take the overdrive off (pushing the button) and take it up to 50 mph then push the button to go into overdrive, it revs real high before going into overdrive unless I take my foot off the go peddle. Is this the way the overdrive is supposed to shift in?

Actually, its sounds fairly normal...which means it may need to be overhauled.

Sounds about like what mine does. I hate the lag on the 1-2 shift. When you have OD off and then turn it on at about 50mph the TC unlocks, shifts, and then locks back up. That's why the engine revs.

Sounds like your bands may be going. I had the same problems with mine when the 1st gear bands went out.

That's normal. I had my bands adjusted when the new vb was installed and it still does that.

"Normal"?

Mine doesnt do that. It did that just before it failed. Smoked third gear and the converter.

Under light throttle shifts firm, under full throttle shifts firm. Never did any Apps reset.

Try having the bands adjusted by someone that knows what there doing or do it your self if you feel you can. Then plan on a rebuild in the near future.

Well that just sucks.

Mine didnt do it till just before it toasted. there was about 1/2" of clutch material in the bottom of the pan.

After the replacement it shifts great, just like it did before the problem occured.

I need to change my tranny fluid so I might as well try the band adjustment. Is it difficult to do? Any good instructions?

Talking One more opinion,,,,

I would say this is definitely not normal. At WOT, mine still shifts into 2nd around 2000 rpm and will bark the tires or break them loose. Although my trans is now modified, it shifted this way when stock.
For some reason between 2nd and 3rd there is a spot where the rpm's make a jump before it shifts into 3rd. This only happens under light throttle. It doesn't have this glitch between 2nd and 3rd when more throttle is used.
The TC is not locked in 2nd and it should shift into third unlocked and then the TC will lock-up which drops the rpms a little. It should not jump in rpms during the shift. Your's sounds like it is shifting from 2nd into 3rd lock-up and quickly unlocking.
Again,, this doesn't sound normal.
Also, overdrive kicks in way too soon. At about 40 mph. Boggs way down.
It does sound like your's is shifting into OD too early. Most of the folks I have talked with say their's shifts into ulocked OD (4th) at about 45 with medium throttle and lock-up occuring at about 50mph.
When I take the overdrive off (pushing the button) and take it up to 50 mph then push the button to go into overdrive, it revs real high before going into overdrive unless I take my foot off the go peddle. Is this the way the overdrive is supposed to shift in?
If you push the OD button while in OD lock-up,,,, yes it will jump up in rpms because in doing so, the TC unlocks and the tranny shifts down into 3rd unlocked. Lifting off the go-pedal a tad keeps this from happening. I think all of the trucks act this way because of the converter having to unlock.

Now,,, I'm no tranny specialist and I'm only posting this as an opinion based on what I've gathered from reading and talking with others.
Do yourself a favor and call some of the tranny gurus like Dave Goerend, DTT, Suncoast and explain how it's acting. I know they can't diagnose it or fix it over the phone, but maybe they can give you an idea of what's normal and what's not.

Forgot to mention one more thing that doesn't seem right. When coming up to a street to make a turn, I don't think my tranny is shifting down to the right gear. As I make the turn and give it some pedal, it kind of boggs down until I give it more fuel and it will shift down. I have to come almost to a stop before it will shift down to 1st. Does this seem right? I'd just like to make a turn without having to mash the go pedal to get it in the right rpm range to accelerate.
