Hey everyone, I could use a little help. A couple of weeks ago
pulling a horse trailer i noticed with the cruise on, the
speed would vary up and down about three mph. Then I noticed that the rpms would go up about 300, like the t/c was slipping but if i hammered on it, the rpms would come back down and everything was fine. So I went to town to get new filter and fluid since it was time anyway, and with the cruise on the rpms would jump 100 and come back down like the t/c was locking and unlocking. If I shut off the cruise and used my foot everything was fine. Checked codes had a 0500, called dealer, they thought is was the VSS, so I replaced it and serviced the tranny. Everything seemed to be fine. Took off on a 400 mile trip, made it all the way out and all but 50 miles back with no instance. Then she started to act out. No matter what I did, whether the cruise was on or not, the rpms were jumping. Constantly. Hit the road to the house and I locked out o/d and ran about 2000 rpms like before and it was fine. What is this, t/c, solenoids, check ball, apps I have no idea. Thanks for any input and sorry for the long post. I have a 2002 4x4 Q/B auto with a power puck

sure sounds like the converter is locking/unlocking. First things I would do is to make sure both batteries are good and CLEAN. Next I would eliminate the two gray connectors near the passenger side battery and solder/heat shrink the ends together (blk wire, tan trace). Those are the easy things to tend to.

Sounds like the TC is slipping to me.Take the power puck off,and go try it again, see if it still does it.If it stops it,it was most likely slipping. The reason heavy throttle made the RPMS come back down is it raises line pressure enough to stop the tc from slipping.

On 02's the TC is locked full time in OD. Therefore, must be the converter slipping, IMO.

.....I think if the converter was "slipping" hammering on it would increase the prob. I know it did when mine was slipping.

Thanks guys, I might pull the puck off but I am definatly going to adjust my APPS and check all the grounds. What kind of life expectancy do you usually see from the stock converter? I have 140000 on the truck but I dont know if its the original converter or not

Ive seen stock trannies last 300K,some last 30K.I doubt it is bad,the trans is getting loose, which is normal, and it isnt designed for extra power.Take the puck off,it will probably run another 100K miles,OR get a full trans and be done with it.You can try a VB or shift kit,and if the internal seals arent gone yet,it will probably hold for a pretty long time.I would take the puck off until you mod the trans or replace it,slipping the TC will put lots of debris in the trans pan, clogging things up,including the coolers.

Ok tonight I adjusted the APPS. I first read the voltage at .567. Reset it to .611 and the tag said it need .619 That was all the further I could adjust it. Checked all grounds and cleaned them and battery terminals. Then I reset the APPS. I also checked the voltage while I moved the throttle and no voltage spikes were apparent, it moved very smoothly. What I did notice was after I started the truck my CEL came on so I checked the codes and came up with 1693(communication), 0122(APPS voltage too low) which may have happened when i moved the sensor the wrong way?, and 1698(no ccd messages to the PCM). I decided to test drive the truck anyway. Now right before it locks up, the rpms jump up and then it locks up. I did notice while at about 75 it was jumping around a little. What do you guys think? Oh yeah and John I took out the puck
